Startling lack of info on the ad but that could be a bargain for someone (not me cos i want to buy a dog)

I never understand when someone wants to sell something, especially for thousands of pounds, and just puts two lines in the ad. Is it not worth more than 10 seconds of your time?
Terrible adverts seem to put off a lot of buyers but can hide some gems if you're local and can just pop for a look. The advert for my bargain 987 was one blurry photo and a line of text saying it was a 2006 Boxster. hehe

Surely it was too cheap then?
It was very cheap yes. But it was sold straight away and the money was in my account.I've never understood the people who 'hold out' for more and have a car sitting for months!

Months I agree, not if the vehicle is common.

It's good! I don't get much chance to drive it but it's fun when I do. Not exactly fast though smile I can't find the time to do all the fiddling with it that I want to, eg change the head unit and give the roof a Renovo-ing... Maybe one day.

The 3.6 is ok isn't it? I've considered changing to a 997, but a 997.1 3.8 is a big no from me and the jump in price to 997.2 is pretty big still

Problem with the 3.6 is it likely has the small single row (late M96 type), so the bore score risk may be lower, but the IMSB failure risk is higher.. if its very early 997 (with M96) then at least it's swappable without splitting the engine. If its a late 3.6 (still early 997(, then it has single row, equally unreliable IMSB, but, it requires engine case splitting for R&R.. Nightmare..

My plan is to get a 3.8, fit LTT, fit centre rad, fit centre rad solenoid valve, then start saving for a bank 4/5/6 barrel and piston kit from Hartech, (about £6-7K R&R).

Beers!

too much hassle though. Instead 987.2 boxster and cayman, trouble free motoring. And if 4 seater is necessary, just include a volvo 850 estate into the drive-way, less than 1k. All problems sorted easily hehe

Is a 997 3.8 really such a good car to be worth the hassle?

I had one in 2005 a few months old with full warranty. I did 20000 miles in it within 9 months. I drove it everywhere all the time as my only car. I wasn't careful or respectful with it. I hammered it whenever possible firm in the knowledge that Porsche cars are bullet proof and mine had a warranty. I even went to Italy during the break between Christmas and New Year - that didnt go too well. Anyway I loved it. I used to get up early on Sat / Sun morning to just drive the aSre off it. It rode very well on the PASM dampers compared to my previous 986. It rode better than any car I had experienced. My Dad still goes on about the great ride and he has a merc s class. It just did everything very well. It was by far and away my best car experience ever.

Would I feel the same today knowing about the engine woes - probably not. Plus I have another 15 years of life experience under my belt and I'm now less inclined to believe a company like Porsche would just replace an engine if I blew it up.

Is this a new method for IMS now? When I had mine replaced, it was much basic no oil feed and etc...

It's quite an invasive fix isn't it and relies on being installed very accurately as I recall

When I bought my last Boxster I considered it but I think the garage I spoke to said they had moved away from it to a permanent in situ bearing

Do they inspect the bearing when they fit it too? If the bearing was close to failure would it prevent failure? I've always wondered that.

All in all it seemed a lot to pay for something not guaranteed to work. If they stood behind it with say a £10k guarantee against IMS failure as long as you log your engine number / VIN when you install it, I bet people would pay more for it. If it is any good that should be a nice earner for them as long as they could stop fraud claims

I wouldn't touch a 986 with a ceramic IMS.
'Allegedly', the early single row ceramic bearings had issues, this is a recent revision dual row so no worries.

I didn't realise it was as simple a design as that, looks like it would reduce the potential for disaster.

There's no more issues with a ceramic bearing than a steel one.

Be a bit gutting to pay all that money for a ceramic that then fails wouldn't it

I'm not saying they won't fail as I have read the odd post where it's happened but I don't think that means it fails more than a OE one. My LN has been in for 6 years or so.

Sure. Did you have it fitted or did it come with the motor?

Had it done the same time as the clutch, amongst a bunch of other stuff, about 2 or 3 months after buying it. This is my 2nd 986.
