I didn't know there was a v8d. I thought just the 3l was diesel.
My boss went from the gen 1 Turbo to the gen 2 V8 Diesel and said there wasn't much between them performance wiseHe also offered me his old Turbo for £500 more than the PX - it was black, 21s, dechromed, stainless steel exhaust, full spec PCM, air etc, FPSH, 70,000 miles, coolant pipes replaced. For £7500! This was in 2014. I regret buying a 2.2 Evoque for £31k instead at the time although the Evoque has now broken even on 10,000 of fuel a year since then!

Nice looking Cayenne about to end with our friends at shillingcarsofreading
Two other pork also about to end 987 & 997.
All three have (not so mysterious) new bidders with 0 history!
Roll up! Roll up! All the fun of the (un)fair!
That looks a good one - 1 owner & FPSH can't be too bad on a 7 year old car.Two other pork also about to end 987 & 997.

I didn't realise that married men had to .... only joking.
What happened to the gearbox, why did it need replacing and how much did it set you back?
I had to replace the gearbox in my 996 shortly after I got it. I sourced a 2nd hand box from the land or germans. It shifts lovely now bit only when its warm. I'm kicking myself because the whining was clearly noticeable but I didn't know that gearboxes were a known weak point. So I bought a car with new rads, suspension and an engine rebuild and thought that's me covered. Then every pipe and tube needed replacing too.
When I’d had the car For maybe a couple years it developed a slight grind I noticed more when cold going from 5th to 6th. Took it back to Northway and they changed the synchro for me free of charge. Problem went away but then reappeared a little later going from 3rd to 4th. I would have had to pay that time so rather than pay to have the box rebuilt, Northway got me a new one on an exchange basis from Porsche for £4K and fitted it free. They are a great garage in my opinion. Still never knew what caused it but I did fit a ssk and did use to drive a bit more jazzy in those days so maybe was just a combo of those or bad luck.
Anyway after that episode we were shopping for my wife’s car and she said she wanted her car without 450BHP, no more than 2 years old, with a 2 year dealer warranty, that wasn’t another Porsche, so the Cayenne Turbo didn’t happen. Kept the C4S though so can’t argue too much.

I dont think that's awful but I'd have wanted to pay less
The 2.9 987.2 they had also sold (maybe) for £9.2k.
Wasn't a fan of the wheels (also appeared to have ditchfinders), and unsure of overall condition, but had extended leather and seemed nice enough. If it checks out, potential bargain.
For someone flirting with the idea of a 9x7, is there any preventative maintenance that can be done around the coolant pipes, which seem to be a common problem are on these?

The way it was explained to me is that the use of 2 different metals in the pipe & fixture is what causes the corrosion so unavoidable. One of them is a total pig to get to. I had all of mine changed on my 987S and the whole job was about £800 from memory at an indi, the car was 14 years old so it isn't a concern if you're keeping it for a bit & shouldn't need doing on a gen 2 for a few more years unless you live by the sea!Wasn't a fan of the wheels (also appeared to have ditchfinders), and unsure of overall condition, but had extended leather and seemed nice enough. I changed them on my 987 Cayman and it was a pig of a job, but mine were quite far gone. I've liberally coated the new ones with some Bilt Hamber Dynax S50 and am keeping my fingers crossed. Given that the first set lasted 12 years then if the anti-rust is any good (and I rate it highly) then it should get the car to the end of it's life!
I too changed the coolant pipes on my previous Gen 1 987 Cayman. It wasn't the easiest job but I'd take it every day over dealing with the corroded exhaust studs!
If you drop the front of the subframe, the coolant pipes are much easier. I really can't see how you could do it properly without dropping the subframe, which is actually very straightforward. You just need to factor in an alignment afterwards, but that is an opportunity to max out the front camber if you haven't already done it.
I wrote a detailed DIY guide on changing the coolant pipes so if anyone wants it, PM me.

If you want the same length damper the the Koni FSD / Special Active is worth a look. You can't just replace one damper though.
So I've fitted Koni Special Active to the front of my wife's Boxster. Both Sides . I went with new top mounts/bump stops and drop links as well. Removing the drop link bolt after many years of a steel bolt in an alloy casting was interesting. I'm glad I'd bought new drop links as a level of butchery was involved. A rattle gun and angle grinder are my favourite tools.
So how are the Konis? Well I only had a short drive last night but behaviour over rippled surface and bumps on my lane is vastly improved. It smooth out what was a jerky ride. I've yet to try on a good, fast A road but I'm impressed so far. The rears will definitively get replaced in the new year with more Konis.
While I was in there I made new hard brake lines for both calipers and caliper to flexy hose. All the other brake hose are ok.
I bought the Boxster for my wife as a birthday present a year ago. In the past year I've spent just as much again in maintenance and repairs but the car is a joy to drive and I know I've spent more than it's ever worth in the real world but man maths makes it seem worthwhile. Happy wife = Happy life. And I know it's just practice for when I buy myself a 996 maybe next winter.

I need to follow this - a Cayenne of c2010 vintage is on the shortlist for family wagon duties next year, definitely petrol, prob an S. Is it worth going for the 2010-on version - there seems to be a big step in price at this point? Not poverty but a nice 2006 3.2S on fairly low miles-

Before the FSD / H&R combo I had old M030 and immediately before that new M030. I was partly expecting something similar. In many respects the end result is the same but the way you get there and the colour and shades you see before reaching the handling limits are much more vibrant or engaging. I wrote a few longer posts on Boxa.net As you wind up the speed it is more compliant and in turn you get more feedback but when you really lean on it and load it up the ultimate handling is the same if not better than the M030. Just look at them. Put a dateless plate on the 2010 and it could be 3 years old. The ones before that look ancient inside & out.jakesmith said:
