My old 944 S2 has 213k on the clocks and did run like an utter peach...The 987 2.7 Cayman I bought 6 months ago is the replacement. It's thirstier, slower and the parts are a load more expensive.

Which would I rather be driving when I have to go somewhere? The 944. Easily.
I found my 944 S2 a fair bit slower than my 996 3.4 - plus less involving and with a boring soundtrack. It was a good car, but not a great one imo. Nice comfy retro cruiser but never really clicked. The 944 got sold after a year, i still have the 996 after getting on 5 years now
I might get another 944 in the future if cheap and rust free as i think they look awesome, but probably an earlier one and tweaked.
Interesting. A number of people I've met through Porsche clubs and whatnot looked at my 944 and reminisced about how much they wished they hadn't sold theirs to buy a 911. It's good to hear a different story.

944's were never about the engine noise; my 987 is hugely much better in that respect. And familiarity may well have a part to play; my S2 was my daily driver for 13 years and 110k miles. And I didn't love it when I first bought it. Maybe I'll love the little Cayman as much when I have had as much experience of it. Here's hoping, for sure.

My indi has a well settled 968 Sport which I usually borrow when he has my 996 in. The cars are like chalk and cheese, would I bail from my 996 for one? No. But I think they'd complement each other quite nicely in a double garage.

The build quality is miles ahead of the 996. You really have to wring the neck of a 968 to get the best out of it though!

The most important thing for me is the way a car handles, not the “character” of the engine. And the 924/44/68 are amongst the best handling cars in the world.

Build quality was excellent and there are no mechanical Achilles heals that I am aware of.

Very much agreed.

Cam shafts and cam chains on the S2 weren't quite what they could have been. Changing the clutches was a pain in the neck. DME relay, anyone? Want to do anything much on the bottom end of the Turbo engine? Well you'll be removing the (infamous) crossover pipe then.

None of these are biggies. The cars were indeed very well made indeed and pretty mechanically robust.

Indeed, and they are great fun to drive - and mine makes a rather lovely noise too. The weakest area I have found was the electrics on square dash cars.

Agree with this. These were revered drivers cars in their day. Only had 2 goes in a 924 but it was a lovely thing. I prefer a nice driving well balanced well built car personally. If I want ‘character’ I’ll watch a Robin Williams film.

I really liked my 924, one of the few cars you can give it 100% down your favourite back roads and not be in fear of losing your licence laugh

When was the last time / has a 928 ever featured on this thread. Not one for the purists maybe but what a period piece. They were about £2k when I last looked am guessing more nowdays?

928’s are magnificent. Even today they look like a spaceship.

Anything decent is a lot more than 2k now.

They never did the new version did they, remember from nearly 10 years ago? Must have seen it as too similar to the 991. The GT segment seems a little staid these days

I always thought they missed a trick not making a Panamera coupe. Pitch it higher than the 911, V8 or V8 Turbo only none of this diesel malarkey. Maybe they thought it would nab Bentley Conti sales?

Maybe they thought they had the GT segment covered with the Panamera - so many cars I see these days claiming to be a GT seem to have 4/5 doors, yes BMW & Merc I'm looking at you. Friend of a colleague had a 928 GTS that he bought from a main dealer for £35k (from memory) after being talked out of waiting for the 996 to launch, beast.

I've never been in a 928. Not even stationary let alone moving. What am I missing?

I've driven 2. The first was a knackered auto that probably got broken for spares at its next MOT, that was awful and a real let down. Second was a fairly up together manual which was lovely. I'm not sure if it was the gearbox or the overall state of the car, but I much preferred the manual

V8 engine up to 5.3 in the GTS
Pop up headlights
Featured in Scarface
Futuristic design that would look striking today

Not sure they were really the last word in driving dynamics but they were quite an icon in their day due mainly to the above IMO
