I agree with Jamie on reliability for mod cars on track.
You need better cooling.
I think the 3rd centre radiator is a good idea and so is the baffled sump if the car will see track time but then the track car will also need better brakes.

But as a road going car, I am interested if the engine revs strongly to redline. The recent GT Porsche issue talks about the 3.9 rebuild but no one has commented on how the engine performs.
I realise that the track aspects are not going to be relevant to all - and, yes, for road use various items could be left out of the build and the performance would still be equivalent to a 996 GT3, but you still end up with an enlarged M97 with some of its inherent weaknesses still present.

Also agreed that for track focusing purely on the engine is completely the wrong way to go. If I itemised everything else that was modified on my car to optimise track performance we'd be here quite some time......

I suppose what I'm trying to say is that the 3.9 rebuild in isolation will produce fantastic performance, but without further complementary modifications you will not make the most of it and potentially risk reliability / limit its useability. To that end I really don't think the cost equation is as favourable as some have suggested. YMMV !

I live in rural Oxfordshire and whilst I see very few police cars on my fun routes, my ability to enjoy a sprited drive is becoming increasingly restricted by people driving at 35mph, lorries using weight restricted roads to avoid the a40, and people in SUVs driving on the wrong side of the road. I may be wrong but it feels to have got significantly worse in the past few years.

My Cayman is a lowly 2.7 and yet most of the time it feels woefully under-utilised.

I love track days because they give you a safe environment to actual use a car properly. @ATM I'd highly recommend it

Good roads are out there I'm sure. Where I used to live for example is a 2 hour drive from my current location and probably still as empty. But a 4 hour round trip to go visit some roads feels stupid to me.

I'd imagine a track is totally different because they're just so much wider. A 2 lane road is narrower than most tracks and you can't always use all 2 lanes on a road. That's probably why speeds are higher on track. All guess work obviously.

I wish I had mine out here... turn right out of the estate straight on to the Rhonda road... 45km of fabulousness, with multiple equally brilliant roads running off it.

Not quite the same in a 1l Focus.

I feel for you bds.

If you're fine with setting an early alarm at the weekend, I'm within about 40 minutes of driving bliss on the road.

If there was an option of a similar capacity V6 which required no chassis cutting to install, was naturally aspirated, offered a 30bhp upgrade over the 295bhp the 3.4 offers and could be had as a drive in (probably on a flatbed) drive out service for say 12k, would it be a goer? (I'd assume not)
How about Toyota 2.5 L 4GR-FSE V6 engine? I'm just curious really, no idea if it would fit in terms of dimensions and other bits? It's a pretty reliable engine, considering Lotus also uses Toyota camry engine in Evora, why not?

Note: I know the output is very low, but perhaps doing some fat-free reductions in the body?

I was thinking VQ37VHR out of a Nissan 370z. 325bhp out of the box. Probably end up feeling similar to a Hartech 3.9

I mean the oiling issues mainly - possibly only of relevance for track use.

I keep thinking about trying track days because our roads now are so heavily congested and / or policed. I've driven over the snake pass before just for kicks and come straight back the other way. Ideally at 6am ish on a sunday morning when its empty. Also the cat and fiddle. But now they have average speed cameras so places like this are becoming harder to find. They are still much better than a track but I understand there are higher risks going quicker on a public road

The thing is I'm scared that I'll enjoy track driving too much and it will lead to my financial downfall. So thus far I have avoided the temptation.
If I was interested in track days I would look at hiring a Caterham 7 with an instructor and trying that. You can then buy an ex race 7 more cheaply than often imagined. I bought a Caterham Graduates Race 7 for £8850 and it is cheap as chips to run and immense fun. And worth more than I paid for it now (road legal, V5 and a couple of mods). At the very least, it won’t depreciate.

Keep the Boxster/Cayman/996 etc for road trips.

Posts like this send me straight to Google to look for ex-race Caterhams. And that's not good.

Stop it please Andy. There's a good boy. smile

Wasn't PIE performance the name associated with the Hartech'd C4S that had been posted up a few times recently. Or was that a different PIE?

The period Audi NA & turbo V6s bolt up to the 911 & Cayman gearboxes and engine mounts can be had, just a bit of wiring.

I read some of their other ads. They have a 997 which talks about a rebuilt engine which they have completed. It mentions steel liners.

They are not that great though, in terms of reliability. Loads of oil leak and cooling is a bh as well due to turbo.
