There could be a gap in market for a specialist 986 breaker. But you would need a reasonable amount of space to store all this stuff. Surely this would mean breaking up some cars for parts. But as discussed I think there are just too many cars in the market right now to make it viable. Unless you bought all the tatty cars around and this would itself cause a shortage and drive up prices. In effect reducing supply. My regular soap box item is the 996 gearbox which is 2500 second hand but if you compare that to a few hundred for a 986 gearbox you get the idea. If you could salvage parts from a 986 box to refurb the gubbins inside a 996 box you'd probably do quite well. I wish I had the time, energy and enthusiasm to investigate this further.
There are plenty of breakers and sources for second hand Porsche parts. Not sure why you would want to carve out a niche on the lowest priced Porsche though. If there is a gap it's probably because nobody thinks it's worth it!

I sold a couple of 986 3.2 gearboxes for £450 each a couple of years ago and they took a while to sell.

There are plenty of Porsche specialists that have 986 bits on the shelf, my go to is 9apart.

Speaking of slamming in some cheap steel bores and making a quick buck.

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2...

Or, shipping straight to hartech and budgeting 10k on a rebuild would leave presumably a very nice 997 with a fresh engine for sensible money.

Yes, I thought it's about on the money now. I thought the tip was supposed to be very good on the 997. Will still be interesting to see what it goes for.

"Tip" and "very good" is an oxymoron.

Love the advert, it's just a noise that's it, you can keep using the car as normal... putting in a litre of oil every time you fill up

Tell you what Audi have the right idea about how to deal with a design fault down the road, even one expensive to fix... my dad's A4 has full service history and when it was 11 years old Audi fitted a brand new engine for him free of charge as it was using too much oil, common fault on that engine. That's how to look after a cusotmer.

Nore me. But it does kind of highlight how poor Porsche can be when dealing with similar issues.

That wasn't the point I was making, not scheme or no scheme. All traders use the scheme. It was under the scheme you pay tax on the gross margin, not profit so spending money fixing up a car comes out of your pocket although being able to claim vat back mitigates it somewhat.
It helps them, not hinders them, as it allows them to in effect claim VAT back on an item where they paid no VAT - the purchase cost of the secondhand vehicle. Without it, they would have to pay HMRC the VAT on the entire sale price of the car (the output tax). With it, they only have to pay HMRC the VAT on the sale price of the car less the purchase price of the car. In both scenarios, the VAT paid on the cost of parts, overheads etc can be claimed.

In my experience with eBay. The only time a car doesn't go with the winner is when they refuse to make any contact, which happens about 30%of the time.

What would the deal be with that. It's clearly from a dealer so am I correct in thinking they would have to offer warranty. £10,700 seems very good for a well kept 4s. The mileage wouldn't put me off in the slightest.

Or more likely shill bidding by friends, family or self.

Actually yes, that does go on an awful lot.

Also. And I've zero evidence to back it up. But there's something about that service history that just looks a bit...... Recently filled out..

Again, zero evidence. And it does to be fair look exceptionally well cared for regarding the mileage.

I really really shouldn't want a 4S because it's got the bore score engine and its 4wd and this one is boring silver with black too but there is something about the wide arches and that red stripe on the back. Stupid right - but when did car lust make sense?

It wasn't a difficult point to grasp
Audi can replace a 11 year old engine that they put in likely 100,000's of cars around the world.
Yet Porsche decide to stick 2 fingers up & leave anyone out of warranty with a 5 figure bill after they didn't design their engines with sufficient cooling / strong enough internals etc.

Could it be said that if that car has got to 170k and 15 years of age without bore score then it's unlikely to occur now... Or is that a very dim witted way of looking at it. (I know very little on bore scoring.)

I'm no expert but all engines wear out eventually. Is bore scoring just a form of wear or is it caused by the way it's driven or just a bad luck thing. Maybe that car has had an engine replacement already and we just dont know about it. 10 to 11 sounds cheap anyway for a 4S but I'm not sure it's cheap enough to get me in the game.
