How does the Z4 compare to a bit of cheap pork?
I’m deliberating between the two. I’ve had the 6 cylinder lump in a 130i and it seemed better suited to wafting over hooning. Too smooth and linear.

They are cheaper to run, main issues are springs, roof motor and that they come with ghastly run flats (not the M). The coupe is the one to have IMO the 265BHP 3.0Si, they are approaching / at 987S money though. You won’t find anyone ever saying the BMW drives as well but Porsches of that age in my experience are really expensive to keep tip top.

You can get a newer 3.0 E89 for about the same money as a 987. Or even - heresy alert - the later 4-pot turbos, the lower power versions of which are an ecu flash away from 280 bhp.

I looked at them closely and tried a 3.0 but it didn't feel special enough compared to the 987 I ended up with. I agree they'd be easier on the wallet to live with though.

Seems to be a dearth of genuine poverty Pork around. Looking at something £3-4k

Had my eye on a local early 2.5, but was apparently sold the morning before I went to view. Seemed to have good history and been looked after

Been keeping an eye on eBay/Gumtree/Autotrader/Car and Classic/Boxa.net and TIPEC but not a lot doing

Problem is you can't really use logic to justify the purchase especially for an early 3.4 croc;

Cooking high mileage £9ker - Will probably die and cost £6k or something for a rebuild - Total £15k (Value £12k due to mileage)

Good con / lower miles cooking £12/13ker - Will probably die and cost £6k or something for a rebuild - Total £19k (Value £14k due to mileage)

Engine fault ebay special, reasonable mileage £6/7ker - Will probably need a £6k or something for a rebuild - Total £12/13k (value £13k say)

If you go into it budgeted accordingly, then the 'rebuild plan from the start' scheme makes most sense.

.......Besides, the 101mm bore 3.9 rebuild is available for the 3.4 now hehehehe

  • Edit: proper man maths that, even impressed myself.

Yeah defo, do you know how much a 3.9 build is extra over an all 6 barrels & pistons work?

I'd just go barrels, pistons, chains & pads, bearings, new factory imsb without seals. R&R the block at home and build up ancillaries at home to save some pennies and make it feel like 'my' engine build. Also I head arp rod bolts are worthwhile when it's in bits. It's just 10k is a strong investment for a 14k Cayman, because I know I'd want to renovate everything else attached of the chassis then hehe

The intake might be restrictive too if you went to 3.9 with racey headers and maybe cats. Once you start down the modification road it is long and winding. Although adding cc is a no brainer if its possible but its the tip of an iceberg.

I think the x51 on the 3.8 adds a few changes. The most visually impressive part was the massive carbon airbox. It looks well ard.

Is that the same as the headers on the 996 3.4? I'm looking for an excuse to enter a world of pain and swap out my exhaust manifolds for some ebay shiny shiny ones. I can't believe the standard ones are good but people seem to think so?

I noticed that, but it looks like they have cats on the entry to the muffler(s?) also though? So they have 4,nr cats total? In which case can one pair be deleted and still meet MOT emissions?

SS pipes would for sure be on the shopping list with a full build anyway! I think I read most rebuilders sort the flange bolt cheese issue for you anyway (cue time for Ti studs also)

Cat-less SS manifolds loads cheaper also tbf

How exciting..

Nice, but note that reading auctions place sells some dodgy tosh though, I recon a lot of the stuff they sell are stolen recovered or insurance recovered. They get about 1 a week or fortnight a 997 with no history and other suspect clues. BUY WITH CARE IMHO.

Ah yes

Cars With No Reserve

One of my favourite Ebay sellers that I've not really been paying enough attention to recently

Let's see what else they have....

I don't understand why there is no aftermarket airbox for all 3.4 - 3.8l cars like this.
A cheap one in ABS and an expensive one in carbon.

Together with a cut-out template and gasket for the second air intake.
They would sell like hot cakes I presume, if they are priced accordingly.

Interesting to see what that goes for, on a forecourt that would be somewhere around £23k?

Reading some other threads on BCA sales, most cars going for cap clean values. The carswithnoreserve auction won't sell unless they get more than they paid. Could be an insight into current market sentiment.
