Ive been lurking here for a year or so now watching this thread with great interest.

Fast approaching 40 and a good excuse for a present to myself.

I can see prices seem to have gone up a few K for a Boxster.

If you had around £8-10k to spend, what would be the best, most reliable Porsche to go for and which engine/year.

Im no car expert at all, but 2.7 Boxster 2003/2004 with a few k ready for anything to go bang? Is that the safest bet if there is one

There is a 2003 2.7 on sale on Boxa.net for £5k right now. Seller is keen to shift as new car arrived. Has dubious Martini stripes but apart from that worth a look I think.

With 8-10k available, I'd buy a Gen 1 2.7 987. I believe that the later ones (2007?) had the bigger IMS bearing (this could be nonsense - I've never been too concerned about IMS bearings myself and have never really paid much attention to the changes), the engine is a little more powerful, and then interior etc is nicer.

I think that the 986 is a fantastic car (I had an early 2.5) but the 987 is probably the better all rounder

For reference this immaculate 62K mile '05 big-bearing 2.7 with a great spec and full OPC/specialist history was a little over £9K, private. That's probably all the money mind. Specialist dealers are asking £10-11K for something similar from what I can see. You might get an 06 or 07 in that range EDIT or even an 08 smile

I bet this is the same one ive seen on ebay. Taking those stickers off surely would have left a faded line on the bonnet and sides.

Thank you plenty of food for thought I do prefer the 987, but I feel that budget wise id be left with very little if anything goes wrong. But then im assuming the Cayman are more reliable than the Boxsters

I posted a £5.5k 987 above. Plenty left in the wallet to tidy it up.

Get on boxa.net The owner is there and from memory the stickers are only a couple of months old. You can do all the remote due diligence you need on that car there.

I gave the owner of the Boxa.net 986 a cover for his car back in January and the stripes weren't on it then.

It was a drizzly day when we met up (at Bicester Heritage) but the car looked in good nick and the guy seemed like a genuine, decent guy (ie. if I had met him to be buying a car off him, I would have had no concerns).

He's just reduced the price to 4750 so sign up and ask him about it.

Not my car so not strictly an advert but a friend is going to sell his very nice Boxster S and thought it fit the bill on this thread as it's cheap yet a really nice example.

I won't put prices up ect as i know you're not really aloud to advertise. As I say it's not my car but thought it fit the bill.

Looks nice.

Is it up on any of the known sites yet?

Agree looks nice - I see a leather airbag cover on that steering wheel and I can’t recall what the option code for that was - but a quick check on the MOT history doesn’t paint quite such rosy picture...

Didn't realise that was a thing until you mentioned. Now I see the stitching and recognise it is similar to the anniversary wheel. This also has the upgraded gear knob and handbrake. Could this have been a little package of options?

Ouch, seems like the car was stored in a small fishing cove. At some of the suspension parts might have been replaced.

5 failure items and 17 advisories on the 2019 MOT is pretty impressive! I spotted corroded on 11 of the advisories.

Wet Nellie appears on the MOT database but with no advisories... (Musk’s millions must have zapped them).

But in comparison with other 15+ year old cars on the market, it appears particularly unloved and un-maintained

Mine was on original suspension (20 yrs old) until recently. I had CoG look at it on one of their suspension clinics & at 82k miles the shocks were in good health with no advisories on the MOT...it was just the top mounts & coffin arms they highlighted in their usual thorough manner, but once you start replacing things it becomes like contagion & you suddenly realise it’s cheaper to just do it all together especially if it’s become clear it’s “a keeper” thumbup
