Each to their own but I'd never be interested in paying £18k for a 987.
Save up a few more pennies and you're into 981 territory which for me just offers better value with the updated look both outside and inside.
As I said though, each to their own thumbup

Yeah I've got a 981. Dont ask about the steering feel. Otherwise its a good package I think.

I had a 2.7 Cayman 987, my first ever Porsche (hopefully not the last...), had it for a couple of years but felt a bit old towards the end. I think if I was spending up to £20k for some 'poverty pork' then I'd be looking at a 996 (older I know, but looks wise I still find them pretty stunning and timeless).

My next plan is a 981, do you have it as an everyday car ?
We had the 987 as a weekend car and I drove a shed during the week, trouble is I found myself just wanting something newer for both the weekend and midweek rolleyes

I've got a 996 as well - but thats it for Porsches I promise. The 996 is 22 years old but feels sturdy enough. I'm not sure many people would use it as a daily driver although I did for a while last year when the 981 was off the road. The 981 still feels quite new and sturdy so I'm hoping it wont give me any problems - not like the 996 which has had all sorts of bother. Once you decide you like Porsche cars there are lots to choose from - even ignoring anything not a sports car. If you put a gun to my head and told me to choose between my 996 and my 981 I'd struggle. Cars get under my skin and these 2 have definitely done that. Cars do different things to different people so I think giving advice is tricky. You can only tell people what you think and then they have to make their judgements. If new and modern are important to you then you have to go towards the 981. If you want old school then you need the earliest water cooled you can find which means an early 996 I'd say. Maybe as an occasional car the 996 makes more sense but I dont see the point of driving a boring car and leaving the Porsche at home personally. Life is too short and all that. My cars are not garage queens so they live outside and never get washed - well not by me anyway.

Where as although a 981 feels every bit a generation newer than a 987.2, I'd rather have the 987.2

All felt very minor thanks. No air bags deployed and I kept the car pointing basically straight forward. I had a similar incident in 2004 which destroyed my 986 - although the insurance rebuilt it. That time I was spinning so fast I didn't know my name by the time the car came to a stop.

I've never experienced a 987 in either gen. I went from 986 to 997 and then had a few years being boring. Then came back with the 981. So I'll assume that with each gen the cars have got quieter and safer and more reliable and more muted and more civilised etc etc. The 981 can still thrill. It makes a good noise and feels solid. You can throw it around and it stays quite flat. The balance is there so you dont feel like its wallowing around. You can still feel the balance even if the steering wheel doesn't say much. I think its a good product and you can feel the time Porsche have put into its development. In isolaton you'd say it was a good car - I'm sure of that.

But yes if you start to compare and contrast to what came before then it all starts to get more complicated. If I had my time again then maybe I would wish I had gone for the 987. But a lot of my driving now is just pootling around in traffic. Steering feel and feedback seems less relevant. In this weather I just enjoy the roof going up and down. I also like the PDK box which I know is not very ph but what can I say I have my own opinions. I remember when I first experienced a DSG box and this is not much different. It is clever the way it goes about its business. If you dont enjoy that then I completely understand.

There is no right or wrong answer. I'm still hankering after a 986 even though I dont fit in those. Maybe I'll try a 987 or ... sharp intake of breath ... a convertible 911.

Unique in Bolton 10k rebuild
Car now in auction reserve not met

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/333646666186

That's a very interesting car to set the bench mark, that has to be around £25k pre Covid, wouldn't you say?
Baz's own rebuilt C4S featured on one of these threads a while back. IIRC it was listed on ebay, too, and was something like £23k. Black with a red interior.
Interesting, the eBay car has PSE and some nice other bits too. Seems £23-£25k would be around where it was at?
Lots of variables but £20-25k would be my guess. Hartech'd 997s have been seen in that range, too.

Ended on 19600 which was below the reserve so did not sell. Ive never understood how bids get reversed on ebay so if anyone can explain it simply and easily please do so. Thanks.

Me too. I’ve got the Sand Beige interior in my Midnight Blue 987 and I like it a lot more than I thought I would.

I’ve never even considered a brown car before, but that colour really suits the 987.

This c4s which was auction at the same time as the Unique car above. It sold for more with no mention of a rebuild but similar mileage.

That car is being sold with an established user with a feedback in the 600s. The other 996 (reached £19,600 and there don't seem to be any retracted bids listed) with the rebuilt engine was listed by a user with zero feedback. That alone will out many bidders off, rightly or wrongly.
