I did the same trick. Cost back in 2010 was c. £1k for a Douglas Valley sourced black 03-04 top. Transformed my enjoyment of the car - I had grown tired of the original blue top that I specified from new which became a little too purple to my eyes.

Very easy swap (6 bolts). Much harder to find one in good condition in a colour you can live with as there are only two years' worth of cars to cannibalise...

Just to clarify as it is a lon time since I was tinkering with mine, you do need the 4 bar frame from the new roof don't you?
It's the 4th bar that lets the glass fold in from memory. You can't just take the cloth roof from a mk2 and install on a gen 1 right?

Yes you need the whole roof. There is also a small difference with the roof or transmission microswitches on the early cars.

I wouldn't say I'm partial to a wrap and I'm not really disagreeing with your central point, I'm just clarifying that cheap wraps tend to indicate a car that has had corners cut and money saved elsewhere too.

Expensive wraps, especially in colours that are hard/impossible to paint, might well indicate the opposite.

Just like a car's tyres, funnily enough.

It's usually pretty easy to tell the difference between a good and bad wrap too - if you can see any of the original colour, join marks in the wrap and or peeling, it's a bad/cheap wrap.

The wrap on my old 996 was excellent, even with the extremely complex deck lid/spoiler grills, you had to look hard to find the seam.
Ah, I see, makes sense now. In fact, I hadn't really given it much thought but I can now appreciate the comparison with the cheap tyres concept. There are wraps and then there are wraps..

Facelift roof is a definite plus - did the same to my pre-facelift car.

Proper glove compartment / cup holder in the 986.2 is nice. Prefer the lines of the 986.1 though.

Lights, meh. The yellow peril is a 986.1, upgraded the fronts to litronics, left the amber side repeaters and rears. Think ambers suit the colour better, but I need litronics. Function over form.
Out if interest, what was the cost (and hassle) to fit the 986.2 roof please?

A good job done as it creates a much nicer silhouette. Was going to aim for a 986.2 for this reason but much prefer 986.1 bumpers etc!
Using the same logic you apply then why not get a facelift and out the earlier bumpers on if that is a big driver for you?
Food for thought! Are bumpers easily interchangeable? As in, bolt on bolt off, same crash bars etc?
I don’t mind the 986.2 in dark colours but in lighter ones that rear bumper does look bit naff.

Going prefacelift to facelift is a bumper swap and change of spoiler mechanism and spoiler.

Didn't know the spoilers were different. What changed there?

Look at the shape of the rear bumper (at the top) and the shape of the spoiler.

Didn't know the mechanism itself differed.

Has anyone gone from a 987.1 to a 997.1? What did you miss, if anything? I really fancy a 997 (engines aside...) and think a 996 as an only car to do it all is a bit too raw for me so a 997

Something like that is getting very, very tempting.

Looks like a nice example, if you're happy with a 997.1 S. Slightly higher mileage, but has some nice options and looks to have been taken care of.

Hi, new to this part of Pistonheads. Basically, a change in commute (or the lack of) has meant I can change my daily to something more... fun. FINALLY.

Having driven a safe, utterly dependable grey diesel mini for over four years and 70k miles, I'm well up for a poverty pork palate cleanser!

I feel this might do it.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Porsche-Boxster-986-Pas...

Having looked at the MOT history, it appears to be a fairly solid car. But I'm a BMW guy so as long as the cooling system isn't original and the sills aren't rusty we're normally a happy bunch biggrin

So what's collective Porsche beard think about pastel yellow, and does anything stand out (in a bad way) about that car? Looks to be specced with no centre console delete, no heated seats, no cruise (but cable throttle on the 2.5s so unsurprised), possibly sport packaged, no upgraded stereo, pre-00 so dual IMS, and vent cupholder(!!).

Basically looking at this or an early Z4 3.0.

I'm not sure, but double check which steering wheel that was originally fitted to this car model - I *think* it was four spoke item without the coloured Porsche badge.

Could mean this one's 3 spoke item has been fitted as an upgrade, or potentially after a crash.

Good spot. Thanks for taking a look. Having done my discount history check (input the reg into autotrader as if you're selling the vehicle and it'll tell you if it's CAT registered), it doesn't appear to have been written off.

I think the 3 spoke wheel has extended leather over the airbag which is a nice addition. This car also has proper leather door cards too. The roof has been converted to glass window so still has the original 3 bar mechanism.

Guessing you can tell it's glass as it's got a smaller aperture? Currently growing my boxster beard as quick as possible.

Side note: spoke to the girlfriend and she was a fan of the colour.

Yes

The size of the window is narrower and its position is a little low. The plastic window is massive. The face lift roof has an extra metal bar or hoop inside the mechanism which protrudes out the back just above the glass. I think it has 4 bars compared to 3.

I went from a 987.1 to a 996 coupe. The 987 was my daily and the 996 is more for fun but if you can put up with a 987, I don’t think there is to much in them.

I like the color. Anything a bit unusual when buying a Porsche is good in my book.
