I've had mine just over a year & have spent around £1.7k on it (some may have waited but I'm a bit anal about my cars bring right)

Included in that figure is

Full set new radiators including air con
New brake discs & pads all round
New rear tyres
Full major service & check over
New stereo for iPhone.
Replace heater display (LCD fault)

I bought it for £5k (haggled down from £6.5k!) for a fsh 2001 Boxster S with 82k so less than £7k & it is now perfect.

It already had a new roof with glass heated window, replacement clutch & unmarked Lapis Blue paintwork.

That's the trouble - your experience has ticked all the boxes for me (I'm easliy persauded!)and illustrates my thoughts.

Budget for £7k - spend £5k with the £2k budget in the bank to make it good - then run it and fix it as it goes wrong/needs fixing.

I would hope that after your fixes it shouldn't need too much else for a while - or is that my naive gene kicking in!

Good to know as that's pretty much my exact plan. Spend appx 5k with a 1.5k immediate fighting fund to bring up to spec.

Did you have all that work done by a Porsche specialist? Where in the countryare you?

Seems relatively 'good value' as I'd have expected that just a full set of discs/pads is £1k fitted, two rear tyres another £300, major service £400 and that still leaves out the 4x rads, stereo and display.

I think you overstate the brakes by 40% or more. I paid just over £300 for front discs/pads/sensors/shims fitted by a local garage with parts supplied by me.

Out of interest. How would one learn how to do this? Haynes Manual?

For the first time ever I have a driveway and a Garage so could feasibly do this, but I don't know how. I would love to learn and tackle them myself once I get a Box.

All work except tyres carried out by local indie Unit 11 Porsche Warrington.

I supplied my own air con rads (off eBay) & had tyres done elsewhere.

Having just had a gander at the price of Caymans I wonder how long it takes before they will be in this thread hehe

I really need to remove this from my list though as it is not helping. Went halves with brother on a second 968CS at Christmas and we keep threatening to buy the other out the nicer it turns out to be with each report from his man! If I let him have it it will be hard not to put the money back into pork.

Hmm, would start another thread but would be lunched by the current owners biggrin

Looking at PH ads only there about 7+ cars on there which would come for less than £15k without any or much arm twisting. None of them have done 6 figure miles. I suspect that the traders might well know of the odd lime green with savannah basic spec. 2.7 with a lot of miles changing hands for closer to £10k.

Dipping in and out of this thread would suggest that £7k-£7.5k for a good 986 3.2s is considered and I can easily see Caymans in that ball park when they are of the same age.

I think that the 'purist' angle will make little or no difference. Most not on this site would chose a £15k Boxster over an identical £15k Cayman almost every day.

I remember buying my Boxster for about £14k (Trade price in Feb '06) and thinking that it'd be worth £10k all day long. I think that I got about £3.5k when I traded it in January 2011...

:goes off to check out the price of 987's: biggrin

ETA Chuff me they are cheap! Please forgive me if I try to avoid this thread for a bit, it might not be good for much bank balance and even the g/f and i would have trouble justifying 4 1/2 2 seaters and an old Golf between the pair of us smile!

Look at the 944 and 968 prices over time. I think the Cayman price will continue to depreciate but won't quite go as low relative to the same period Boxster.

6.5k will get you a good 3.2s with lots of age related things taken care of. Mine will be up in the classifieds later this week.
