It was really hard putting a price on mine when I was selling it and that's what we do for a living! I'd owned it for 9 years, paid £8,900 for it then, spent a fair bit on upkeep over time, I'd also done the front suspension 2 years previously and was more about making a break from it than anything else. I had a 205 GTi that I owned for a similar amount of time and sold that too. I thought I was going to miss my 205 the most but really regretted letting the Boxster go. There was a week in between the guy paying the deposit and collecting it as I had to take my number plate off and I thought about calling the whole thing off several times. He was too nice a guy though, a self employed mechanic and I could tell he was going to both look after it and enjoy it. Hence why I'm getting the train to the big smoke on Thursday to hopefully bring home another one!

@ £6500 I'm tempted to say I'd have that myself.
Haha, not sure I would want to sell it to anyone on here.

Knowing my luck it the RMS would pop out on the way home, the coolant pipes would split, the condensers would get stones rip through them, it would suddenly drink a litre of oil and be the only 3.2 with bore scoring and the IMS bearing would fail as you pulled onto your drive!!

Perfect timing for this thread to pop up.

Due to (lack of) work i've had to put plans for a 996tt on hold frown so i've been browsing the classifieds for something a bit more in range and spotted this ebay Link which I quite liked the look of.. thoughts? I would like a colour rather than silver/ black and I appreciate that that cuts my choices significantly.
Looks nice enough on the advert. I personally wouldn't buy a 987 3.4 that's not been bore scoped, might be worth factoring that into any inspection you do.
Buy an early 996 without turbos instead of that
Exactly.
The 987 is a much better car than a creaky old 9x6. Just go in with your eyes open and you'll be fine.

I think it's all about what you want out of it. I think a well sorted 986 is a rawer, more involving experience than a 987 but it's horses for courses really. As long as you're out there, enjoying your car nobody else's opinion really matters!

Yeah I have a 981 if I want to feel posh. If I want to feel retro the its the 996 I call upon.

I have to agree with this, much better. The 986 is not really raw like an Elise, I’d say the only thing more ‘raw’ about it is the very cheap feeling cabin full of plastic and the crap hood on the early cars making you feel like you’re in an old car. The 987 with full leather is a massive step forward in what is supposed to be a luxury sports car. In terms of the drive, I’d say they’re pretty identical having had 3 in total. 987’s power increase is very welcome. 986 is great but the 987 was a step forward (unlike say going from 997 to 991)

I really don't like the 987.1 cabin, I think it has aged really badly.

The 987.2 on the other had is great.

But I actually prefer the 986 cabin over the 987.1. It is what is putting me off an early Cayman.

Can you retrofit the 987.2 climate controls?

It’s the entire console not just climate, it’s 3x units. If you look carefully the controls are not that different gen 1 to gen 2, it’s just that they are black not grey. I was going to do this in my 997 but didn’t get round to it but basically you take them apart and just have them painted black and lacquered. They are all trivial apart from the PCM which needs to be completely dismantled. I’d do it though, there’s guides online it doesn’t look hard just keep a record of screws. The climate and the bottom row with the PSM / PASM / spoiler and PSE buttons all come out and apart with a couple of screws. There’s a company that for £80 will repaint your climate buttons with a hard finish, so that at the same time.

Got to be one of the best and cheapest upgrades out there.

I don't agree, I think the swoopy curves in the 986 scream late 90's early 00's. I don't actively dislike it but it does date the car. The 987 is a step forward for me, although it's bland I think looks much more modern (mine is the poverty spec with no extended leather).

Indeed I remember sitting in a 986 when it was new and I thought the interior felt low-rent even then.

The 987 was a huge step forward although definitely feels it’s age now.

I quite like the retro feel of my 996, although a glovebox and cup holder would be nice!

I've said this lots of times before. But here goes again. I had my 986.2 for about 6 months before I realised it had 2 cup holders. I had a drink in slot 1 and went round a bend a bit swiftly and out popped the 2nd. Luckily my warm coffee beverage was almost empty and didn't spill.

Got to be an easy retro fit to the 9x6.1 but I dont see many cars with this done. I could continue to live without the glovebox but the cup holder feels like serious luxury if your car does not have one.

Apart from a change from silvery to black centre console plastics they're pretty much exactly the same aren't they?

I've got a 986 without cup holders, drives me mad. Apparently they were optional for some fiddly clips that attached to the air outlets but I'll be lucky to find any. What do the second generation ones look like?

It's got a glass screen in the hood so feels a bit more respectable.

Yes they are.

I do not get the love for Porsche cup holders though, they are literally the worst I have ever used. You can't put a ponsy Starbucks in there unless its anything less than half full.

I had these in my first 986 and in a pinch they worked quite well (mine was just a weekend/track car so I didn't use them that often). Annoyingly I left them in the car when it was written off. At the time I didn't realise that they were remotely rare - I thought they all came with them.

People always comment on the 9*6 interior being low rent, but i have never had an issue with it....with the extended leather it feels fine to me. In my line of work i deal with alot of modern VAG cars which everyone raves about and don't really see if as being any worse than those.
