Skyedriver - if you want a Porsche 911 and need usable rear seats and would prefer a more open approach (roof open or closed) then the Targa is the only way to go in my opinion.

As mentioned before, the rear seats in a 911 cab are very tight and uncomfortable compared to the coupe and Targa. That’s what put me off a cab when I was looking at 996s.

Don’t worry about the Targa roof robbing headroom when it’s open - anyone affected by that (over 5’ 5”) will be more upset about the lack of knee/legroom in the back!

I suggest you drive all three versions and see which one you prefer and suits your (and your family’s) needs.

I’ve owned a 996 Targa for 7 or so years and have previously owned a 996 C4S (with metal sunroof) and Boxster S; I’ve kept the Targa for by far the longest time so make of that what you will.

If you choose to go down the Targa route, make sure the roof works properly, doesn’t squeak or creak unduly and - most importantly - doesn’t leak! Although most squeaks, creaks and leaks are solveable with a bit of effort.

Always had a soft spot for yellow with the hard top on as I used to live near someone who had one and I was super envious

Otherwise could be a good car underneath
Clearly been loved and low owners
I like the talk of garaging and I'm always keen to buy from someone who can show me their garage because it saves the car from rotting away
If only he'd chosen a different colour to red as it clashes with the yellow but could be died or sold on surely
Is that no AC I see so totally standard car or is it just not climate?
Probably still needs 5000 or more spending on new suspension and clutch and rads and ....

As RD says, the only appealing thing about that car is the colour (and that's a matter of personal preference, although I'm with you in liking it).

It's a very definite 'No' from me. Along with a discrete head-shake and disappointment at how sad it is when great cars are ruined by 'aspirational' owners.

Oh and yes, its the standard 2.7 model like mine was with no A/C - this I think is a good thing on a cheap Boxster as
A) the manual control panel is much nicer than the naff 90s beep-beep orange LCD
B) lighter, simpler, no a/c lines no condensers in front of the rads to rot away, shorter belt run etc etc.


The seats will have originally been that Black leatherette/vinyl with every-so-slightly-blue Alcantare centres of the base model, which if in good condition are really nice but by now are generally a bit bobbly and worn out. Nicer than 'ruffled' shiny black leather IMO at least.


If it wasnt for the initiials in the headrest, those trimmed seatd would fetch good money on ebay too for a Porsche/Beetle/camper etc.

Bought this beauty yesterday. I didn’t mean to but when the bloke showed me the history file I had a funny turn
1992 reg 944S2 3.0L. 96K miles. Never missed a service, every MOT it’s ever had in the file, all the old tax discs
2 owners in the last 21 years always garaged, never been out in the rain, about 1000miles per year so lovely usage profile. Drives beautifully, not fast but covers the ground well. Everything works. Guards red and not guards pink no rust at all! Virtually all original paint, just a bumper and a front wing been blown over, invoices to match obs.
What’s not to like



Looks great in the garage with some of the other toys. Adds a lovely splash of colour.


Complete poverty spec but black leather, sunroof and no aircon. Perfect

It looks lovely, congratulations.

It remind me of a late Guards 944 Turbo that I almost bought a few years ago - similar condition but higher miles. I still wish I had done so. It would be worth several times the price now so would have been free ownership for a few years even if it did throw up some big bills.

Your profile suggests that you're IoM based. Was the car? I guess there have been 96k miles worth of dry days on the island in the past x years! Possibly.

Ha ha yes it’s fairly wet over here! The guy I bought it off brought it to the Isle of Man in 2013 at 85K miles, prior to that it was a “mature” owner who had it from 2001 as a retirement present. I got a copy of the Pistonheads advert in the document folder from 2013 when it was last sold. The car was originally registered by AFN Porsche Reading, remember them??? Presumably as a management car rather than a demo given the low spec. I have even got the original AFN branded number plates that were on the car from new which can go back on whenever I reregister it in the UK. Always assuming I can get the original reg back, but I think you usually can.

There wasn't much spec to choose on 944's. Air-con on an S2 was very rare. Occasionally you find one with sports seats but that's not common. The 'black leather' you mention may not be real leather, but the plastic covers often wear better than the leather ones anyway and don't need maintenance in the same way.

Those 17inch Cup 1 alloys are very handsome wheels on a 944, although changing them for smaller and lighter 16inch D90's will improve the ride and handling.

God you are a hard audience today I’ve only had it home less than 24hrs.
£9K which I do not know is a good deal or not but I was happy to pay it.
You are probably right it may not be leather but it looks nice and is in very good condition. It’s got that nice porsche script on the seat cushions which is very tasteful.

I need to sort out the bits of protective plastic on the sides of the wings. They have faded to an odd burgundy colour which looks awful. I need to research what it should look like.
The man I bought it off was very proud of the fact that it had Proflex bushes! After a quick look underneath I didn’t have the heart to tell him that they were doing bugger all as both the front anti roll bar mounts have snapped off, another little job to attend to. It will keep me busy getting it all shipshape. Hours of endless fun to come .

I think when you move back to a UK plate it defaults to its original, like when you take a personal plate off a car.
