The problem with the shifters for 986, 996, 987 and 997 cars is that the parts that matter are generally made of nylon. They wear and don't hold the ball joints so well. The bushes are also nylon. There are various options to replace these parts.

My Boxster has a troublesome gear change. It is tight and a bit stiff. Occasionally you get a bit lost when going down from 4th to 3rd. Much less often also going up from 2nd to 3rd. I have no idea what this could be but suspect the cables are a bit stiff and / or it might need some adjustment. Well that sounds cheaper then serious problems in the gearbox itself. Any ideas lads?

They are a complex, convoluted mechanism. I spent a lot of time on my 5 speed (same at cabin end, different at 't'other) sorting mine.

The cables are long, and go dry. They are also VERY expensive!

I'd start by stripping the centre console out and inspect the shifter assembly. The two bowden cables are attached using some plastic clips which could slip/loosen. The general mechanism is prone to wear.

You can reset where the 'neutral' (centred) position of the gear stick is by unclipping the cables and re-attaching.

Its all pretty obvious how it works, and also how it wears, once you have it apart.

Down at the transmission end, your 'S will be different to my 5 speed but the linkages are still close to the exhaust and get hot and crusty over time.

Theres no obvious 1 guaranteed nailed on cause - it will jsut be a case of inspecting, tightening, lubing, checking your way round the system.

And dont buy the aftermarket blue anodised short shifter as it only makes a poor shift worse.I made that mistake. Genuine Porsche 9X7 shifter assembly is an improved design, actually fixes the bits that cause the play, and is not actually that much more expensive.

Oh and, the other thing that made a huge improvement on my car was replacing the two gearbox mounts (with 993 engine mounts!).

The box on my old E30 M3 was always reluctant when cold and I changed oil to Redline MT90 and was surprised at the improvement. I know some folk also use ATF with good results.

I've bought some fully synthetic Millers 75w90 for it. But I'm not sure when I'll get chance to do it.

Something rather dodgy there, car is LHD with US spec rear bumpers and the photos appear to have been taken with a digital camera from the 1980's, if that's not some sort of scam I'd be very surprised. scratchchin

They charge a lot less if you advertise a car at under £1000 so people do that and put the real price in the advert text.

He's/She's done quite a number on it. I can't imagine anyone bothering to repair that though.

A dander down memory lane here circa April 2020 when the country was in full Covid grip. I remember this 997.1S with engine rebuild took over a week to sell on facebook for £14k (or less)...

Engine rebuild cost equals the Sale price...some body blow for the seller that must have been.
