I saw that - amazing work. I think "4 day makeover" would be a more accurate description wink
The thing is after that could you just park it outside - answer No. You could her them discussing which family member's garage it was going in. I think the more you polish these cars you the more they get moth balled.

Agreed. It looks great, but you would be paranoid about every dent and scratch.

Everyone says don't let mileage put you off and buy a well used car which has been well maintained, well this one sounds well used and well maintained right?

Naked ocean blue by tbe looks of it, such simple lines. Surely this car will be the first of the 996 to be accepted as a true classic

Not my favourite Porsche Blue but way better than Zenith.

I much prefer Zenith blue over the darker shades!

That looks OK for a 'driver' but I'd worry about rusting with that mileage. Going to be a real pain to fix the paint too.

I've got an ocean blue and it looks lovely when clean in the sun but once it gets dirty and overcast it looks pretty boring IMO.

I reckon that could be OK for sub £10k.

Paint a pain to fix, but not impossible. At least it's an honest car with all the expiry bits done.

I'm thinking about this as a base for a track/fast road toy. Not fussed about cosmetics, most of the suspension and brakes will end up being upgraded at some point so the mileage on them isn't a worry and the big-ticket items like engine and gearbox have been tended to. The only thing that's stopping me right now is that I prefer a .2 with the GT3-RS-esque 'track-look' over the .1. Hmmm, what to do?!!

Sounds to me like you need a tatty looking 996 with Baffled Sump, KW Clubsport coilovers, stiffer roll bars and poly bushes. Just like this...

I do indeed, something like that would be just the ticket, red interior aside.

Very light on options, although whether that matters at this end of the market I'm not sure.

High miles on a 987.1 S. Some people will run a mile, some people will say that if the bores were to score then they would have done so by now. I guess a you'd need a good borescope inspection and to keep your fingers crossed.

Not really possible to say with confidence exactly what the relative rates of scoring at various mileages are. But it's certainly the case that there are examples of scoring above 100K miles.

That car is almost cheap enough that you could buy it with a rebuild priced in and it could still be value from a certain perspective. Hartech conversion to 3.9 was £15-16k last I checked, so you could possibly have a 3.9-litre car with about 350hp for mid £20k's, which is very cheap compared to just about any other modern Porker with a comparable capacity and NA output.

Would want really nice spec and pretty good cosmetic condition before I put a five-figure investment into a car like that and not sure it's quite right in that. regard.

Lovely.

When you compare this to that patchy blue 996 with starship miles, it's a no-brainer for me.

Don't get me wrong, a 911 Carrera is a fabulous thing to drive, but if the truth be told (and at the risk of being expelled from Pistonheads)...

A Boxster is better yes

I came to this realisation when I once borrowed the key to my Dad's 2.7 987 Boxster, having driven up to see him in my 997 C2S. Hopping back in to my car, as nice as the extra performance and the extended leather was, I felt very short changed for what is fundamentally a very similar car to the much cheaper Boxster.

There, I said it.

You have to really need those rear seats.

I was out in my 996 with no rear seats today. I pulled over to talk to 2 young ladies. The thought did cross my mind to offer them a lift but I just dont have the seats so I said my farewells and drove off.

Having just sold my 996.1 I’m second carless. It’s odd walking into the garage and seeing a space where there has been a car since 2008. I had a Caterham and MX5 prior to getting the 911 in 2018. I’m about to undergo treatment for my prostate but if the prognosis is correct I should be ok by September. I’ve been looking at Boxsters to be my next toy but unsure which way to go. Budget around £12k. I’m sort of heading in the 987 direction.

986 is very 996 so will feel almost identical

I've never driven a 987 myself. I did have a 997 for a while in 2005 and it was lovely. I think the 987 should be a good car. I'd have difficulty believing in a 2.7 even though the performance difference isn't really that big. I'm just a sucker for buying the quicker models. My 986 does feel a bit slow at times. Once you are used to having the performance when it is taken away you really notice it.
