I'm not saying that Porsche are getting it wrong, I am just saying I prefered it when they were rarer. My first encounter with anything Porsche was when we had the Top Trump cards at school. I was only 12 and was really taken with the shape of the 911, something I had never seen before. I was taken to the 1976 or 77 motorshow and stood there looking at the white Martini decaled cars on the Porsche stand, I was captivated. When I was at college, I was told of a 911 parked nearby, I walked 20 minutes just to see it. Now aged 51, I can stand on almost any city street corner and see the whole Porsche range within an hour. Maybe I am stuck in the past and thats why I drive an air cooled 911, but I feel there was just something magical about them when they were rare.

Do you remember Fast Lane Cars in Standish? I used go in there nearly every day after school! It was mostly Fords of course, but they had them all! I remember them getting the original Cosworth and the RS200. Porsches were completely off my radar as I thought them unattainable! They were other worldly.

When you get older, you just cant recreate that sense of childish wonderment!
We used to visit Fast Lane also ! Had XR3i and then RS Turbo in those days but always longed for a real sports car, specifically a 944 Turbo. Remember seeing a beautiful red one parked outside one day....just stood there for ages looking at it. Like you say, Porsches were completely unattainable and Ian Anthony Porsche wouldn't even let us come into the showroom without a serious frowning upon first biggrin

Just shows, once you get the Porsche bug, it never leaves you !!

Mclaren have delivered a car in the spirit of Porsche for me . It's form over function , daily usable , still exciting , well built , not a bling ferrari , hasn't missed a beat and its still rare . 911 is now a mass produced gt car and I made no mention of gearboxes ?
The manual gearbox will die not because of Porsche or mclaren but because people are just not buying the damn things .
Daily usable? My idea of daily usable is being able to park it in the supermarket car park without worrying about if it gets scratched to bits and also if something does happen to it being able to roll down to the local garage and getting some cheap bits for it.

I don't think the Mclaren qualifies in those areas for me! smile

As a Porsche fan I really want them to get the rear of this car right, as they will be a common sight on the road.

If the endown it (as rumoured) with the GT prototypes rear end then this will be a good looking machine.

I hope they get the SQ5 engine in there. This may well be my next car, I had the 3.0tdi Q5 before my Cayman S and loved it!

Rumours on Rennteam suggest that the "Larson" white car (page 38) is a more accurate representation of the final car....

That is a very generic design with all of the current trends in place.

Its pretty disappointing really from a company that should be leading.

I like the sound of this but is it based on a Q3? If so I fear it will be a bit on the small side for me so a second hand Cayenne maybe better or as this is PH the recommendation would be a used 90's 5 series touring and a GT3.

Based on the Q5.

I think that has dated more than an early boxster. Bearing in mind they would have needed to raise ride height, proper windscreen and some roll over hoops. That proposal would never have looked like that in road going form.

The production one was pretty close and honoured that concept quite well I think.

3.0 petrol & diesel.
First deliveries in April.
No 4 cyl for now.
3rd petrol model (not 4cyl) may follow soon after launch, or even at launch.

Can I ask peoples who have pre ordered non lunched porsches before what is the process?
Will my local dealer put me on the list & what sort of deposit have you been putting down, also when it is lunched and you dont like it can you get your deposit back?

I could ask sales man but would rather get real live examples

I assume you mean 'launched'...??!

Typical deposits are £3k to get a place on the waiting list. Then, when full details are revealed, you can decide to remain on the list and order in the normal way or simply request your deposit be returned.

The £3k just obtains your place in the queue.

This may vary by dealer because that is not my experience.

I am in the queue with my dealer. No deposit required and I have a number in the queue for that dealer.

He said once details are released as to launch spec., engines and prices, they will then ask for a deposit. He has not said how much.

If the dealer doesn't know you, then I guess they may ask for a deposit to get you in the queue

This is how my OPC does it too.
