3/"slightly" Improved rigidity, aerodynamics, crash protection & revised supension set up
4/ new look tear drop lights & front/rear (looks less like a Boxter from the front) !
5/ A glovebox
6/ The cup holders !!!!!!!!!!!!
7/ Standard fit OBC (computer)
8/ Three spoke steering wheel
9/ Upgraded interior plastics
10/ a more aggresive exhaust sound.
plus a few other bits.

Depends on how long you want to wait.
the 997 will affect 996 prices, so they will drop over time anyway...
the Mk2 is nice, but so is the Mk1.
the Mk2 looks prettier, and is obviosuly newer and more powerful, but the mk1s are so cheap now.
you can pick up a mk1 for < £30k if you look hard enough!
Will be a while before the mk2's come anywhere near this imho

30k will buy you a very nice 3.4 (1998/1999 car)
With the 3.4's its worth remembering they tinkered with them pretty much every year to improve them - for example the 99MY has clear lights & they also sorted out the slight idling fluctuations that effect the 98MY's.
Obvious I know but pays to get the latest 3.4 that budgets will allow.
I had a 1998 C2 3.4 for a year then moved to a 3.6 C4S.
I had the 3.4 for a year & it was a fantastic car. Remember also that cars of that age are going to need some maintenance so budget for that. MAF sensors & drop links are very common things to replace on older 3.4's with 30k plus miles on them - I had to replace the MAF (£350) & the front drop links (£150) on mine.
Apart from that it never missed a beat.
If you want a 3.6 C2 then - at present - you need to spend around £48k for a decent one. Prices are on their way down with these models due to the 997, however earlier 3.6's are unlikely to be hit as hard as later 3.6's mainly because its a different pool of buyers - so I expect earlier 3.6's (2001/2 cars) to hold their value better.
If it were me I would wait a while & then get an early 3.6 car. They have a lot more grunt mid-range & its just a better car all round - not hugely better in any one respect but better all round, more sorted.
I would get one of those, then get it checked by Porsche & then get a Porsche warranty on it - it now fully cover RMS leaks.

Have decided to beg, steal and borrow the money and go for a facelifted version!, may as well have the car that I really want...
This post gets my respect, buying with the heart, going for what you really want etc.
BTW, can I buy the car off you in a year for £10,000 less? Only joking, good luck in the hunt.
The 01 in blue was offered by a trade contact, the dealer who offered it to him was waiting for the seller to swap it in.
have asked him about my latest idea so will see what he comes up with, also perusing all the adds to see whats out there.
musn't be in too much of a hurry...there will be something!

It is a significant improvement dynamically over the Mk 1 in my opinion. Plus more user friendly.
I thought the Mk 2 was more understeery than the Mk 1, but more refined.
Some of the power output hike was absorbed by a weight increase.
Can't question the better looks of the Mk2 though.
