NEW 981 BOXSTER OWNERS - PROSPECTIVE PURCHASERS FORUM
Discussion
I have to share a bit of good news for Boxster S - 981 owners (or potential owners) in that I had my 2013 Manual Boxster S on a rolling road last Saturday and despite only having a scant 2,100 miles under it's wheels; it produced 335bhp and 275lb/ft torque! (For reference the maufacturer published figs are 311bhp and 266lb/ft). Hence this is higher by 24bhp and 9 lb/ft torque, small, but pleasing increases.
I think with a few more miles it could go even higher - but it certainly explains why it doesn't feel any slower than a 997 C2S at the top end and is very, very close in performance testing to the 991 3.4!
I'm now wondering if anyone has RR'd a manual Cayman S and whether there is any real difference?

Just completing a 3000 mile trip through Europe. A500 (Black Forest) Stelvio Pass and today Route Napoleon. I can assure you it wouldn't have been the same in a hard top. The boxster is quiet with the top up and tremendous fun with the top down.
I can completely vouch for the above! I took my 981 down to the Italian Lakes through Switzerland (Grimsel, Furka) and Stelvio on the way back and Germany. It was quite enough on the motorway for the long stroll back to Calais from Strasbourg but incredible fun with the roof down in Italy. I was initially going to order the Cayman but changed my mind at the last minute....they're both great cars but it is fantastic to have the roof down option. PDK.

I was thinking of a Boxster again, and wondered about two things. Apologies if this has been covered before, but I don't think I would get through all 98 pages.
1. Is it genuinely worth having the S over the 2.7? I had an S previously and I just thought that you had to be going a lot faster to stretch the car, there were fewer opportunities to do it, and more opportunities to lose your licwence when you di.
2. Is the difference between the Boxster and the Cayman detectible. I have always found the handling of a coupe crisper, certainly between the 986 and the Cayman, but maybe the 981 is different.

Only driven my S, so can't comment totally on it vs base level, but I don't like to feel I need to ring the neck of something all the time to have some get up and go. So I'm fully in favour of the full fat version.
There's a bit of track evidence for no real difference between Boxster S and Cayman S in this month's Evo test at Blyton Park, a track I've driven, both posted identical times.

When I started to see about owning a Porsche my first thought was it must be the 'S', more horsepower and faster and 0-60 in about 5 secs.1. Is it genuinely worth having the S over the 2.7? So had a two hour test drive and as you already surmise you need to be going at well serious speeds to make you feel that you are stretching its legs.
At one point feeling that I was getting on top of it and looked down to the speedo and saw three digits on a country backroad, yes its quick.
A week later I had a go in the 2.7 and I had more opportunity to rev it out, I also felt the engine was sweeter and smoother. You got to redline it more and the journey felt more special.
Within half hour I had decided I would go for the Boxster 2.7 with PDK, I did have it for the rest of the day and drove my favourite roads enjoying myself.
Both cars had PDK which I wanted from the outset.
Price was also important to me and the fact the 2.7 is about £8k cheaper was a major factor
Never driven a Cayman and certainly the 981 looks gorgeous but for about £2k less you have the dual roof option with the Boxster. Driving with the roof up, you do not feel you are in a ragtop. It feels very solid

Yep it was fun. Just planning the next trip through Spain. Seems like there are some good quiet roads down there too. Won't be like the stelvio pass in a snow shower, although I can vouch for the comfort of the seats - we had a 9 hour 'ride time' on the display that day as we bailed out of staying atop the pass and headed down to France to avoid the snow.I was initially going to order the Cayman but changed my mind at the last minute....they're both great cars but it is fantastic to have the roof down option. All I can say is that for my taste a pretty bog-standard "S" was a lot more attractive than an optioned-up 2.7The more options you put on the car the heavier (and slower) it gets. In the options list the car gets heavier at about the same rate your wallet gets lighter!

(previous name: BensterNR...)Love the pic (and the plate!) and good colour choice. I nearly got the black but very glad I too went Agate Grey.
I did Stelvio last year in my old A5 and it was brilliant (and sunny!) but no comparison on this year even though it did rain hard. We are thinking of doing east coast of Spain down to Malaga way (maybe ibiza??) OR down to Venice then ferry to Croatia. Decisions decisions.
Did you get the PSE? I regret not ticking it sometimes.
