RE: Porsche 997

I looked at it closely at LMC2. I wasn't sure Porsche could make something worse-looking than a 996 but they have surpassed themselves again. Hopefully the work done by top class engineers will yet again save that hideous rear engined thing from commercial failure.
Yet more rubbish from across the Channel.
Were you run over by a 911 once or something?

This new 911 is a brilliant looking car. It's understated and has a gorgeous profile, while still looking like it is quite a zippy beast. I would have probably liked if the lights were more emphasized (a la the 80s turbos), but this is still a very impressive design.
For those that think its boring... you can always buy a Sagaris.

May as well throw my two cents on to the pile. The porkers tend to change so little from one version to another and it is sad that it's not a little more dramatic looking but it's really unique compared to the other boxes you see on the road. I'm not sure what it's like to drive, the reviewer didn't really say much, but I'm sure it steers, brakes and has a nice linear throttle. I've always liked the flat 6's noise too. So to drive a realiable car that farts around as such is really pretty good. It sounds better than a bimmer M5 IMHO or one of those heavy powerful Mercs (Most V8 except maybe the flat plane V8). I froget, does this have the updated suspension design from the GT3 RS or is that totally different (remember hearing/reading the GT3 susp. wasn't quite right but the RS had improved). It'd be a great car to jet around in. Certainly more evocative than an M3 or even an M3 CSL? It's good stuff.

In the latest PCGB mag, some bloke called Walter Rhorl reckons he can lap the 'ring at least as fast as the 996tt in the latest 997 (presumably the S)...
I'm sorry but if you have the slightest clue about performance production cars then that is just staggering.
Every time I see a 996 (any variant) driven in anger, I'm reminded just how remarkable a job Porsche continually do - the evolution of more and more 'evoaction' without entirely compromising the essential sense of involvement we all crave.
The 997 Turbo can just right orf - the 996 is bad enough - this bugger could just well be the nutmeister general of all time.
See you in September, Thom.

When I took delivery of my first and last 966 in February '98, I wanted my 6 months old 993 back, to me the 993 was the last real 911, not only because it was air cooled, but for its timeless styling and traditional hand built qualities. I know things must change, the 996 is cheaper, service and repair costs are far lower. The 996 is more forgiving, but these things have just taken the creamy head off my beer.
Having had ten 911's and a few other, some may say very pretty, but pretty unreliable exotic vehicles, I can say the only practical and reliable true super car for every day use, that will not cost you the earth to maintain and will hold its value, is a 911/996, lets hope the 997 will be the same. But a little advice, my last 911 which was one of the first 996's had several teething problems, so wait until the 2006 model year, when hopefully they have sorted the 997 before buying one, I am.
