Just interested really as I'm very happy with my TVR V8S.

I've read many a good word about the Club Sport, but if I were to ever make the move it would have to be a cabrio.

So come on, what are they like to own/drive/live with. How much do you guys pay for servicing, etc.

No 968 CS cabs made..i have only driven a cab once and i recall there was more scuttle shake than i would have expected.
Servicing costs not much different to a 911 of the period.
look out for timing chain probs, can result in usual valve /piston meeting and new cams...not cheap.
Also rear pinion bearings are a known weak point.
I had a CS where cams & clutch were fresh, better if someone else pays.
Not getting involved in the 968CS /944 debate, more 944 boys who like to make themselves heard

Take a look at www.968uk.com for probably everything you want to know. Much better built and ultimately more capable on road and track than your TVR, but first impressions you'll miss the rawness of the TVR. Try to grab a ride at a track day to see what they can do. Can't comment on the cabriolet I'm afraid - Never been in one.

I'd spend a little bit more and go for a Boxster instead !!

At least this car was designed to be a cabrio, rather than a Coupe with the roof cut off !!

I know the 2.5 wasn't exactly a rocket but, if you could get an early 'S' then i'm sure that's more than a match for any 968.

(Please don't hit me you 968 lot !!!)

968 has very nicely balanced and forgiving handling, my grandmother could comfortably balance one on opposite lock around roundabouts while deciding whether to get a blue rinse. Sadly underpowered relative to the capabilities of the chassis unless you can track down one of the handful of 968 Turbos that were made or do a turbo conversion on a regular 968. Cabrios, of course, are strictly for girls and posers.

I recently made the move to a 968 cs from a 944 turbo. I prefer the low down smooth power delivery but really do miss the out and out power of the turbo.

A 968 at around 270 bhp would have been an amazing car

The suspension and overall handling of the CS however is a league ahead, though I don't really know why as my 944 had uprated suspension (M474) despite begin a very early one and the CS only has the basic (not MO30) option. However it is a much stiffer and better, particularly on the track.

I've often wondered how much better a CS is from a standdard car. The differencw of 50kg and slightly lower springs seems very minor, but the handling of the CS is fantastic.

The odd thing is these care really do not feel that fast but one look at the speedo shows just how fast you are traveling.

I even had mine dynoed it felt so slow, but it made 223 whiich is pretty good as few ever make the listed 240bhp

Ahh, was hoping this wasn't the case as I am neither!

Thought a 968 cabrio would be a good choice to allow me to endulge in my need for a 'performance', 'wind in the hair', well balanced sports car that my girlfriend could easily drive and enjoy (no requirement for Schwartzenegger leg muscles and bravery).

Quite a bit on the subject was covered on a thread I started a little while back.

www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=48&h=&t=80012

I still fancy a 968 Cab but I just can't bring myself to pay the asking prices at the moment - and looking at how long many of those for sale have been hanging about - neither can quite a few other people too.

Do like 'em tho'

Bob.

The M474 on the 944 is not really much different, the M030 is a much better option on the 944. The main diff i think is the bigger anti rol bas on the 968. These can be retro fitted to the 944.

For the price of a CS, you could have a nice 944T with 350bhp 350lbft and ready for the track.

If you're happy with your V8S I would stick with it, in this particualr comparison. The Club Sport, which is only available in hard top stripped out and lightened format, is a very nice car - great drivers car.

The convertible, not available in Club Sport format, typically has all the goodies on board, adding weight, the roof is chopped and then all the chassis/body reinforcements added in to add more weight, you still end up with scuttle shake, and performance I think would be down quite a bit on a TVR V8S. Personally I think you would be dissapointed, but it depends what your priorities in a car are.

However I've never driver a 968 convertible, so probably worth speaking to those who own them. The 968uk forum, as someone previously mentioned, may well generate more specific responses on ownership experience.
