exhaust/muffler bypass? (996)
Discussion
Has anyone had the exhaust bypass kits fitted to there 996? Been watching a few vids on youtube and the cars don't seem too loud. What are they like to live with? My car is a weekend toy but i don't want to be getting made def if i'm just plodding along at steady speeds.
Also what are they like come MOT time?
Where is the best place to buy? the odd kit i have seen are £300+ which is a lot for 2 short pieces of s/s pipe.

Evening, had it done on my 997,well worth it, sounds abit blowy on start up but great when warmed up, really throaty on acceleration and not being boomey or intrusive at motorway speeds. I went for the 1 inch pipe, Hayward and Scott did it for about £400, great service.
No impact on mot.

Just remembered about this;
Found some more pics/vids of the exhaust on the fabricators webby
Time Taken; 1 1/2 Days
Cost : On par with Hayward and Scott
So bit more work put in than the normal straight out pipes (which is what i thought i was getting) and looks like i can get a smallish silencer in there to lower the db limit.
It originally posted 108db at track testing conditions and was stupidly loud inside the cabin - need for ear defenders. However, its since quietened down as ive put the miles on. Will need to get it checked out at a track sometime soon and see if i can join the Goodwood day
Im not sure if its lost any power/performance but id need to stick it on a dyno to find out what the curve is now like. Though without a before comparison, wont give an accurate respresentation.
But the pops and crackles on the over run or when changing down gear sound immense
Also, videos taken by Long Life

Wow. What a difference.
Are you happy with it?
Longlife did the straight pipes on my old E39 M5. It sounded immense.
When i first got it done, i was happy with it for the first day or so, then i realised how noisy it was and how much in intruded in the cabin - it wasnt the db level but more the frequency that was doing my nut in (itd reverberate off of the window and into my right ear btu left ear is fine). Are you happy with it?

I was considering going back and having small silencer put in he following day but decided to persevere with it with the plan veing see how i felt at the end of the summer and im glad i did. Now its been dirtied up on the inside or its had a few heat cycles (done about 1000 miles since doing it), its quietened down to a more acceptable level and not nearly as noisy as when i picked it up.
I had put a pair of muffler bypass pipes on my 996 3.4...not to everyone's taste admittedly, though it kept me happy as a weekend car - my friends were less happy when we went for the occasional Sunday breakfast run as it sounded pretty immense apparently following it and it also set off car alarms as you drove down the street. The pipes also created a slight loss of torque low down as well. FWIW, I thought it was a great VFM mod, though SWMBO did say that she could hear me on my home for about 5 minutes....I don't live in an urban area fortunately and also put them on the car myself which saved some £s (though the exhaust clamps were all pretty new etc.!)

hi sounds good does the new silencers make much of a difference? and where did you get the small silencers from?
cheers
Hello,cheers
Yeah the new silencers make it sound much more PSE like with a similar sort of lift off fluttering you get with one.
I did want to try and keep the noisier pops and crackles but the loss of low down torque via the bypass was starting to annoy me so i just gave the fabricator a spec of; want to keep the pops/crackles and regain the low down torque.
Where did i get them; i just gave the guy (Longlife Stevenage - some people have issues with longlife but i dont) a pic of the Afterhours one. Stuart from 911UK had previously done what i done and this is the route he took - so yeah, im coping him if you like though he has 100 cell cats. Where mine slightly differs is that my guy used 4" cans instead of 3" but look stubbier than those from Afterhours.
Hopefully ill be able to get a noise comparison video done soon and ill head to Bedford tomorrow and get tested there for noise.
Im hoping to get a better pic but this my new exhaust
Ive painted the bottom one black as it was quite noticeable when viewed from the rear/side
Anyway
OEM - 99-104db (Sure i posted 104db at Bedford last year at the Evo Mag track evening
Bypass - 108db
'Afterhours' - 105/6 db 103db from the side.
Dipping the clutch didnt seem to have any noticeable effect on the db levels and each time the car had 30-45 minute drive before hand

Heard on 997 was unimpressed. Ask Pav on here.
Is it easily reversible? I imagine when it comes time to sell it may limit your market.
You can buy used PSE boxes for £500 which sound the best.

Yes, i have the OEM boxes in the loft so should i come to sell, i can swap over if required.
You may well be able to but i dont have the wiring for PSE. Ive heard PSE and the sounds a bit to muted tbh

You don't need wiring for PSE that's only if you want the switch for sound.
Bar GT3 the PSE on 996 was the loudest.
