Has anyone had this decision to make? What did you decide?

For me it would be a 991 every time and twice on Sundays.

As i'd choose the flat 6 over the 4 any day as for me it defines the car.

In seriousness though, both have different driving dynamics and I'd drive both for completeness.

991 without even thinking.
I would also choose a used 997.2 in good shape over a new 718.

I am actually looking around for an early 991 in Germany.

Just to go against the grain, for your due consideration OP. smile

Mid-engine > rear-engine

Smaller & lighter > bigger & heavier

Updated tech > older tech

Thrilling whoosh-thump delivery of a turbo > linear delivery of an NA

718 > 911

The 991 out of those two, for absolute sure.

That flat six just defines Porsche sports cars, you can't get it anywhere else. Plenty of cars with turbo fours out there, and many more to come. Run the 991 and if you don't get on with it buy a used 718 down the track.

The 718 may grip and handle a bit better than the 991, so if that's more of a priority perhaps consider a 981 Cayman GTS or GT4.

That's what I'd do.

Based on the options. NA. Flat six.

The 718, even with a sports exhaust doesn't sound as good.

From a dynamics point of view, I'd go for the 718.

Genuine question, do you mean that the 718 would be simply more effective on a twisty road or do you think it is more satisfating, engaging and interesting to drive on the same twisty road? I was impressed by the 981 Cayman S effectiveness on one of my favourite road but I would still take a 991 for the wider range of reaction and different feedbacks, still more similar to older 911s I know best despite the outside dimensions were closer to current Caymans.

A 991 even a standard Carrera and not an S?

Many people say don't do for the non S!?

Since I never possible to afford either 991 or 718, i would say 718 seems to be a better choice.

Porsche used to build cars that simple but fast, like the old 911s; but the new 99x just becoming more and more complex, something like Ferrari Lamborghini rather than the lovely little air-cooled car we once knew. Also having the 911 name means it carries too much for what it should be, all these mechanical designs of new 911s were to make it looks like a 911, rather than being a true sport car.

So the 718 started to feel like the old 911's taste, a sport car waste no weight on things you don't need. A small and powerful engine located in the centre of the car, only 2 doors you'll have and only 2 seats you'll need, what's more you want from a sport car?

A proper engine?

The chap who referred to the 718 as having 'whoosh thump' power delivery has clearly never driven one. They do not. They have the power delivery of a small turbo engine pretending to be a bigger NA engine (and failing).

The 718 is a rampant embarassment. I put it one step up from the Macan.
