I don't comment much on here but, somehow, can't resist this one!

I had the 996 RS from new and loved it but it wasn't what I would have called a well set up car. It was on the edge, admittedly and great fun to drive, but was always ready to bite you. I've raced cars for years, won many championships in top single seater series, and, from my experience, out of the box, this was not the best handling car I'd ever driven. Loved it to bits, but recognised that it could have easily been improved upon. Have had the RS's since then and, surprisingly for me, I enjoy the current one more than the others that came before... (and I still don't understand why with the PDK box!)

The 6RS is very sensitive to geo changes and at the time a few OPCs weren't that brilliant at getting them right.
What championships did you race in? We may have competed against each other.

Easy. My mint 1997 993 C2.

I'd spent 1,000's getting it mint and just how I wanted it. New windscreen surrounds to remove all the rust, front end respray, full new suspension setup including shocks, brakes with big red upgrade. Interior was flawless etc etc etc

But unfortunately my OPC knew me better than I knew myself and tempted me away from this and really "sold" me into a 2003 996 Turbo which was allegedly a "sorted" car.
Buying from an OPC - what could possibly go wrong ? . . . . . .
So I part ex my mint 993 for a 996TT that has spent more time in the garage than km's driven and needs to have a shed load spent on it - new shocks, wishbones, brakes front and rear, heat shields, electrical gremlins etc etc etc. I've done less than 10k km in the 20 months I've owned it, and both the 993 and 996 are daily drivers for me.

Don't get me wrong - the TT is a stunningly able car and gave me lots of smiles when driving - but it does not have the character and charm of the one I always wanted and from a cost perspective is worlds apart. So have sold the TT for something more sensible for a couple of years to ease the impact on the wallet !

How I miss that 993 - it was the car I always wanted as a kid. I had it - then sold it - and really regret it.

Don't be. We live and learn - and this was a valuable life lesson even at near 50 years of age.

I had a great time with both cars and as someone said earlier - just enjoy what you have been lucky enough to have. A GPS indicated 306kph on the autobahn will be memorable for me in the TT.

But that 993 . . . . . . . . .

I think the whole thing is just super annoying. A few years ago you could buy a bit of air cooled lovliness , have some fun improving, driving whenever you like, polishing and driving some more. Then after a bit swap it for another another : one 911 is never enough - they're like girls , so many to choose from, all different, all great, but different. I always like the fact that as time moves on, you suddenly catch an old 911 that did absolutely nothing for you, out of the corner of your eye and suddenly that's it, you're in lust and the chase begins - or it did !!!!

It can be draining, if you're not careful they can become less and less like cars and you can start worrying about all sorts of crap and it gets in the way of the enjoyment - I long for simpler times. smile

You decide.

In krowno croano the order I owned them in biggrin (roughly).

The first Porsche I owned, a 32k miles 964 RS, the sweetest handling 964 RS. Keeper. Didn't have a digital camera back then .......

The second 964 RS, low miles, all original panel/paint. Sold to a mate. Keeper.

993 RS, true lightweight spec, no airbags, no aircon, no leccy windows, 964 RS high glovebox dash. Keeper.

My first 996 GT3. Sold to a car club and bought back some years later. Subsequently consigned to the great scrapyard in the sky by yours truly frown Keeper.

First GT2, a stunning looking car in beautiful condition, buuuuut an ill-handling beast that I did 20k miles in come rain or shine. Not a keeper.

#

Skint and wanting a hit of Pork, I bought this C2. Hated it, sold within ten weeks.

First 997 GT3, highlighted all the handling issues my Midnight blue 996 GT2 suffered. Comfort seats not ideal, but what a weapon, superb handling, epic engine, hopeless gearchange. Keeper.

Third 964 RS, thought I could carry Rubystone off. I couldn't. Probably would/could now though ....

Seconds out, round 2.

Second GT2, proper seats, leggy on the miles (for one of these back in 2009) a superb car that handled beautifully and a credit to its previous owner. Mapped, RUF exhaust (see below) Ohlins, and a few other bits. Keeper.

Had to buy this :

To get this :

Job jobbed :

hehe

Low miles (12k), immaculate. 'Fraid to say I hated it. Keeper all the same ....

My second 997 GT3. CGT seats (the worst instruments of torture I've ever sat in) PCCB's. A lovely car, but didn't do it for me (had planned to do a Sharkwerks 3.9/4.0 conversion, Ohlins TTX's and Alcon CCX conversion on it) It would've been guilding the lily for road use. Stuck a pair of 997 GT2 folding back carbon buckets in it, they transformed it.

My second 996 GT3. Manthey K400, Mk2 six pot calipers, Alcons all round, Cup toe links, Clubsport cage, Ohlins 3 way adjustable remote canister dampers, MPS Cups. Along with the second 996 GT2, probably my favorite car. Keeper. (and up for sale at 911v now)

No accounting for taste ..... (not guilty) smile

Can't have too much downforce apparently...... (again, not guilty m'lud)

Some semblance of order restored.

My third 996 GT3 ..... A truly stunning example (partially ruined by a a previous owner with some hopeless "tuning" bits. But all removed and returned to standard) I planned to transfer all the bits off the black Manthey car on to this perfect, original panel, original paint (except for the bumpers) example. However I was convinced to leave it standard. Sold as it was no match (from a driving perspective for the Manthey car) recently sold by 911V. Keeper.

Fourth 964 RS.A labour of love and a truly stunning example once Matty at Fearnsport and I had restored it to a condition as good as the day it rolled out of the factory. Service book and magazine articles signed by one Mr W Rohrl. Keeper.

Fourth 996 GT3. Rare C16 Clubsport. A lovely example of superb car. Keeper.

Bored yet ?

Well here's a rather lovely bird I had lunch with recently smile

Blimey Slippydiff, you got around a bit didn't you! Don't understand how you haven't ended up too in love with some of those to part with them, can only assume that you're not the sentimental type.

That 993 RS ..... num num!

Slippydiff.......Wow, I wish that I had the money and enthusiasm to change cars as much as you. An impressive array of Porsche. On top of that to 'restore' so many of them too.

I suppose my next question has to be are you married and if so does she keep a suitcase packed at the bottom of the stairs ???? Poor girl must be on tenterhooks.

I have always assumed most are either in the NA camp or the turbo camp but you appear to be 'transgender' or is it 'bicurious'.

Anyway good effort. I cannot add anything else to this thread as have only ever owned one Porsche and she too is a 'KEEPER' in the true sense of the word not the Slippydiff sense.

Pip

Sadly showing another online nutcase just means she'll have proof that online car forums are also bad for you! smile
