RE: New Porsche four-door GT named
Discussion
I'm frankly surprised at the response here. I would have thought the existence of cars like the Mitsu Evo, M3, M5, and their ilk would suggest that a saloon which can seat 4 adults can also be a high performance driver's car.
Even though the Cayenne might an automotive oxymoron (off-road sports car?) which is fundamentally compromised in order to do two diametrically opposed tasks, why do we assume that Porsche has finally transitioned to the dark side by offering a sports saloon/GT?
To my mind (providing they get it right), this would merely reinforce Porsche's reputation for building the sportiest car in its category.

I also remember a 4 door 911 touted about 10-15 years ago.
It actually looked a bit like a 993 front end with a 997 back end, and a roofline like the photo you just posted.
I only mentioned that I remembered it, the photo I have posted however is what the Panamera may look like
I think this is a good idea, much better than the Cayenne, I would never really consider one of those, but I do have a soft spot for super sedans, and this should give BMW a real scare so they up the ante on the M5 which can only be good. The twin turbo V8 without the pork of the Cayenne will be interesting
That picture doesn't look too bad, but I think it would be better if they hid the rear door handles like an Alfa 156 or took a mazda RX8 approach. The big problem is taking the Porsche shape and making it look right on a sedan, they failed miserably with the Cayenne, the sloping backend is a problem, it usually looks terrible on a sedan (think Rover SD1 yuck!) so they either have to take another approach or make it look like a pseudo coupe IMHO. I'll wait with interest.

"The new car, arguably the spiritual successor to the 928, is said to be a combination of coupé and saloon, it will seat four, and have a boot capacity of some 450 litres"
Hmmm...doesn't sound like a 928 to me. Yes, I've seated four (with a lot of pain) and fitted lumber into the hatch (damaging my shifter knob in the process), but there's a lot of 928 owners who consider the spiritual successor to it to be made by Aston Martin. Besides, a lot of the "spirit" of the 928 resided in its Tony Lapine-penned looks.

Seems like a logical step to make a four door sports car. Don't think it will dilute the brand as Ferrari have done the same without too much harm to their image. I don't think Porsche can rely on two(three?)models to keep them afloat forever. Anyway, didn't they use to make tractors as well!
When did Ferrari make a four-door car? I only remember the Pinin, which was not put in production. Ferrari never produced a four-door car.

Yeah sorry, meant four seater! Bloody fingers!
