Bit fishy IMO. Tyre warmers and slicks at 23 secs. Probably boosted for the lap to high heaven too. I don't buy how thats faster than a 675 LT and 488 GTB by over 10 secs.
Disagree. It seems the ambient was supposedly very cold that's why tyre warmers were used as obviously he was going to be cracking on immediately. Given it's a sport auto lap not a merc lap, I don't believe they would have allowed a car with slicks for the supertest, and it would have been dyno'd as well. It should be comparable to the 488 that they ran 7:22 recently to be honest as it's the same driver (different conditions obviously). And Sportauto had their 918 only do a 7:13......488 - 670 HP and 1475 kgs
MB GTR - 577hp and 1600 kgs

what ever they did 7.10 is mental and faster than a 918 !
As you say >10 seconds faster than all the top Super sports cars atm !
I agree and thats fine but then at least say you're running circa 750bhp+ and or race fuel and slicks etc. As you say >10 seconds faster than all the top Super sports cars atm !
918 is a sub 7 minute car round the ring by the way.

488 dyoned at 700 hp and weight incl full fuel load of 1553 kg. Air temp when they did the lap was 15 Celsius.

God that's impressive
i guess thats why you call 15 years of progressionabsolutely it's a very impressive lap time from an impressive car, but to compare it with a car (996 GT3) that has its design roots from about 1998 (both gen 1 & 2) is difficult. Yeah sure the golf is 150bhp down on a 996.2 gt3 but it's got a modern drive, modern tyres, modern stability control etc etc
That being said, the way it deploys that power is quite impressive though - sub 7.50 from a 2.ltr is a good effort
Like a lot of cars recently its got boost and a power band as wide as a house.
Add very stiff body shell + wide track + very grippy big tyres, shouldn't really be surprised how fast it is. The civic Type R lap 'records' they posted at various tracks also showed you can get race car like braking performance these days as well.

I'm not surprised by this at all having driven a Golf GTI mk7 recently. The way the chassis flows with typical UK B roads is astonishing - you can carry as much pace along a twisty section as in a 997 turbo and in many ways its more enjoyable as its not stop start like in a faster more powerful car where you're always having to get on the brakes to slow down for a corner. All the car you need IMO. Better put together than a 996 and 997 too. Not cheap mind you. I specced a standard GTI 5 door with performance pack and a few other bits on VWs configurator and it was close to £40,000!
Yeah, but you can get a Golf R for under £250 a month, so surely you can get a GTI for even less. A lot of car for the money really; has made me have a think once or twice!I read that the Mercedes was using a new/special Cup 2 tyre.

Torque to weight ratio on a GTI performance pack and Golf R is very similar. GTI performance pack also feels like its putting out a fair bit more than its quoted 230 PS.
The Golf GTI Clubsport S in the vid is actually lighter, more powerful and i think circa 27 secs quicker round the ring than an R. I'd take the Clubsport S over an R in a heart beat in fact I'd take a standard GTI over an R and if you really need or want more power a quick remap takes the standard GTI to R levels of power for £500. GTI's handling is more fun too IMO although I can see the attraction of an R on our wet and leafy roads. Both v.nice but I honestly don't think £35k to £40k is cheap for either. In fact in the R you get very few options. VW charge an extra £750 for satnav. £1700 for leather and £1400 for DSG (same with the GTI). Their sister car Audi S3 is only £31.5 k and they charge an extra £750 for all the aforementioned options altogether. BMW M135i auto also only £31.5k.
My daily driver is a MK7 GTD with a remap. Nice practical daily but the Miss's Clio 182 trophy is a far nicer car to drive. The Golf is very easy to drive quickly, the diff sorts everything out for you. All you need to do is keep the power on. Great fun for the first few times but a little boring there after.
