IMO you can't look at the sales figures and presume the split between diesel and petrol is purely buyer driven.

Yes there are those doing high miles and those who have to pay BIK who will have deliberately sought out a diesel. But there are many doing average mileages who simply bought what was readily available or pushed by the OPC.

I can personally cite the example of my last car, albeit a BMW 6GC. I only do 5k/year so would have ideally liked a 650i. But there were none available. My choice was paying close to list and waiting 6 months for a 650i. Or for a massive discount, taking a pre-reg or what was in the pipeline and getting it immediately/within a month or two. They were of course all 640D's. Guess what I ended up with?

There are lots of other factors that have influenced the split between Diesel and Petrol. Where manufacturers have put their support. Residual calculations. Dealer/Manufacturer targets. Which way the salesman pushes you. Etc, etc. As those influences reverse we'll start to see a truer picture of what buyers actually choose.

I suspect most with average mileages won't suddenly jump ship because it will cost them £23.5k instead of £22k to own and run a Macan for 3 years. At £22k youre already set on making a silly financial decision, I doubt prudence will suddenly kick in for the sake of £1500.
