I would like to replace my chain and cassette. I can do the chain no problem but have never done the cassette myself. Apart from the new chain and new cassette of course, what do I need to buy to undertake this?

Bike is a Cannondale CAADX with Shimano 105 (11 speed) groupset.

Cheers.

Forget about chain whips. Sooooo old fashioned, daaaaahling...

https://www.decathlon.co.uk/chain-whip-cassette-re...

There's a video showing how to use it on the link too. Chain whips can slip, but located in the cassette teeth properly, this tool won't. I wouldn't go back for all the tea in China now.

This, a decent cassette lock-ring tool, and if you want to do the job "by the book" then a torque wrench that covers 40 N⋅m (Newton-metres) too.
It's a really simple job to do, so simple I regretted not buying the tools and DIY-ing it years ago.

I came here to post about this tool, and was beaten too it.

It's a revelation, and whilst not the most commonly used, is definitely the best tool in my garage.

That is an interesting tool indeed! I'd probably be tempted if it was a bit smaller - won't fix in my toolbox.

Get a bigger tool box.

It's that good.

Sadly not. It has pins spaced for 11t, 12t, 13t and 14t smallest sprockets, but not for 10t. You'll have to persevere with a chain whip on one of the larger sprockets instead. But if 10t cassettes become more popular, then Decathlon or someone might produce a similar tool for 10 tooth users...

It's a shame, looks spot on!

Great bit of kit, only downside is it's not available for delivery.

The other downside is that store stock is very hit'n'miss. When they run out they seem to take ages to re-stock. So if you see one in store, or see that a store does have stock on their website, then buy one there and then. I made that mistake last time, thinking I'd leave buying one until I needed it. Then I had to muck about repairing the broken chain on my 'el cheapo' chain whip.

One tip, though, for any 10-tooth sprocket/12-speed cassette users. You don't have to buy a new, specific 12 speed chain whip. Just use a length of life expired chain from your bike to replace the "fatter" chain on a cheaper chain whip aimed at 7/8/9 speed chains. You can even fit the chain to the tool body with a used 'quick-link' which makes it super easy, and you'll be doing the environment a favour by repurposing/reusing an old tool, and saving yourself money by not buying yet another new one...

I use one of these (fits on an 11 speed cassette okay), I like multifunction tools smile
