Morning all, I know this subject has been covered several times in here, but I've been quoted £400 for 2 days in a Camaro (48 hours) for a weekend in later in the year. Seems very expensive compared to what I've read, but I'm still very nervous about using Turo or ending up with a Sebring with Alamo!

Anyone know if that price is about the ballpark these days, and if the price they quote is a final price (inc insurance and taxes etc)? Also, is it worth joining the loyalty scheme if I'm only likely to use it once a year?

Thanks smile

I upgraded to a Camero RS via Almo last time I was in the states ($210 for the week) and was looking at car hire for my Vegas trip in September.

My plan is to rent a Mustang via Virgin (Almo) for just £70 including gold insurance and GPS (for 24hrs) and possibly look at upgrading once I get there; but im not too bothered what I end up with.

I've rented a lot from the Hertz Adrenaline Collection in Vegas and elsewhere - Corvettes, Camaros, Challengers and even a Shelby Mustang when they used to do these - never a problem and always got the car booked. Apart from once when I'd booked what I expected to be a C6 Corvette, but the C7 Stingrays had just been launched and there was a rather nice new yellow C7 in my space instead smile No complaints there then.

There is no 'list price' for a rental - it's all down to supply and demand and what the market will stand on that day, I also rent virtually every week in the UK with Hertz and from the same location for the same 2 days of the week it can be anything from £32 ro £90+ for the same car.

But also note the prices are PER LOCATION and not per city. Look at the same car/dates from other locations - one time we wanted a Corvette the Wynn wanted a little more than McCarron, but that was TWICE what it cost to pick it up at Caesars. So even if the plan is ti pick up/return to the airport, check out some of the other locations in town such as Caesars, Paris, Wynn etc as they may come up with different rates. I don't recall ever being hit with a one-way charge in Vegas and I've certainly got a taxi in from the airport a few times, picked the car up at a location on the strip and returned to the airport.

Price will be 'final', but they will try to sell you all sorts of other stuff if you visit the desk such as removing the excess and paying for fuel up-front and returning empty. If you really want to avoid having an excess you can get a cheaper 'rental excess' policy in the UK either for a one-off trip or for a year. I have an annual one and its waaaaaay cheaper than paying to remove the excess at the desk - or just live with the excess. Returning empty is a rip-off - you can never plan it to return the car having consumed all the fuel you've paid for - always choose to return full and fill it up yourself. So on that basis the price on the web site will be the price you pay. You also usually get a choice of pay at the time of booking or pay at the location. With foreign exchange etc it's usually a bit cheaper to pay in advance than at the location.

The Hertz loyalty scheme is certainly worth it for regular renters - the Gold Canopy pick-up is so much easier than messing about at a rental desk (useful at the airport, but no real difference at a casino pick-up), you get a 1 class upgrade (but no use to you if you specifically choose something out the Adrenaline collection), you get points for free rentals (but you won't get enough with 2 days to do anything useful), and you get discount codes through (but it won't do you much good on your first rental). So very good for regulars - not sure if there's any benefit for a one-off rental, but I recall it's free to join and no harm in it.

Enjoy. There are plenty of stunning driving roads around - one of my favourites anywhere is the road to Valley of Fire that runs north of Lake Mead. Fabulous twists and turns, dips and crests, and a great road surface too and little traffic. Stunning scenery too.

Thanks all, some very useful information there!

Adenauer, did you specifically book a Camaro RS or was it one of those 'or similar' classes?

I had actually booked a Mustang convertible, the reason being that with Sixt you either get that, or if they don't have it, a Camaro.

Some of the other rental companies (ie. Alamo) will offer you a Sebring or some such stbox as an alternative and for the sake of paying 40 dollars more (Sixt v Alamo) I'd rather know what I'll be driving around in for the next 10 days biggrin

I had also looked at Turo but just couldn't bring myself to risk it going wrong, it also wasn't that much cheaper really.

I just looked on the Sixt App and a Mustang for 2 days in November in Vegas is coming in at 252€ for a loyalty member.

Cheaper than your price but it still seems nuts considering yesterday I booked the same car for 10 days in January for 480€!!

Can I ask what makes you nervous about Turo?

Only reason I mention it is because I was able to rent a Corvette for $80 per day in Miami over new year. Waaaay cheaper than what the Hertz collection were offering...

Last time I was in LA for a while I bought a sim from 3 that had unlimited data and 300 minutes free calls worldwide for £20 and used Google maps or Waze on my phone.

That lasted me a month or so.

I rented a Camaro SS in Portland OR with Alamo, $630 for two weeks! Steal.

I actually booked a Mustang convertible, but they had none available. The BMW they offered was much too European for my liking.

I saw the Camaro in the carpark and asked about getting it instead. They said it was in the same class, so no extra due.

Really glad they didn't have any Mustangs in the end as it probably would have been an Eco-boost. Instead I had two weeks with a 6.2l V8! biggrin And didn't miss the droptop.

I know it's not directly relatable as Vegas is probably more expensive, but your £400 (c.$560) for two days seems pretty expensive in comparison.

I've rented twice in Vegas from Hertz, first time was around £60 for 24hrs in a Camaro, 2nd time was around £110. Weekdays are a lot cheaper generally and weekends the most expensive as they're prime rental time

Sorry, should have come back and replied sooner. There doesn't seem to be any regulation on the standard of maintenance of the car and I couldn't see any written confirmation of the exact levels of liability the renter signs up to.

In the end I managed to tweak the pickup locations and drop-off times and get it down to just over £300 for the two days, so I went for it. Camaro SS convertible. Slightly excited now!!

Just a couple of observations:
Chrysler Sebring has been out of production for about 8 years, rental companies don't offer them anymore.
Camaro RS is a 6 cyl slug.
Turo is a scammer paradise - if you have a hankering to give your credit card details to an uninvolved 3rd party in exchange for a fancy car that doesn't exist, this is your option.

You sure it’s a SS ? They don’t normally let brits have them. I have rented through Amex and because I have maybe 10 times ,they allow me. In fact I have one in four weeks time, and again for Xmas. £1000 for four weeks each time, through Amex no need for any insurance, they cover me.
If you have a ss ,good on you.

Unless I've misunderstood just how insanely hot it's likely to be going from Vegas to LA at the end of July, I would assume the price reflects an almost complete lack of demand for convertibles then?

There's a reason why we and the Germans but far more convertibles than the French, Spanish, Italians or anywhere else with summer temperatures much over 25 degrees on a hot day.

Are you doing that in Vegas though? I can't imagine having the roof down very often with average daytime temperatures of 34 degrees in July. Apart from anything else, surely the seats & steering wheel would get unbearably hot?

Yeah I did Vegas last summer and I’m doing Vegas this summer but the hottest place I think I’ve been was the road between Vegas and Joshua tree , Amboy Road where we saw 45 still the roof down Aircon on max
Hopefully this year will be the Mustang GT convertible which has air-conditioned seats as well. Only in stationary traffic will I put the roof up.
As a footnote, max two nights in Vegas for me !

Yes because Hertz have the adrenaline collection where you book the exact make and model of car. Obviously you pay a premium for the privilege but I didn’t want to book a Mustang convertible ‘or equivalent’ and turn up to find I’ve got whatever the American equivalent of a Vauxhall Cascada!
