Just a hypothetical question obviously,
If someone were to receive a nip for this, As far as I'm aware there is no fixed camera on the Ladybower to Glossop section so this must have been a mobile unit? Do they have to be marked police vehicles?
You can request photographic evidence, which would be interesting. I presume asking for this has no negative impact on any potential case?

Cheers for any reply.

Police car, mobile van, helicopter., just an officer with a 'hair dryer', or from the back of a horse box or even what looks like a builders van

No need to be marked at all for any of those

You can request photographs, the Police are under no obligation to supply any until it gets to court and a not guilty plea has been entered, so that can be an expensive fishing trip.

Have you an idea where on the Snake?

Usually in the layby on the left at the end of the long straight parallel with Ladybower.

Even when it was 60 you had to be careful.

At least you can avoid the points with a course at that speed (I think)

aka the place where it is safest to overtake and not the bit that the 50 mph limit is intended to control.

Van a mile from the reservoir turning/bridge. It's an obvious van. An idiot overtook me at 100+ over the brow of the road into the long straight

I imagine he lost his licence

White squares on the road a set distant apart and a stop watch would do it. Not sure how they read your number plate though.

Yep. That's their usual hiding spot in what looks a tatty old builders van.
Occasionally seen controlling the bridge at Ashopton catching people getting a bit giddy coming into Sheffield - and fair enough as the junction for the Derwent Valley is badly sighted - but more commonly at the tail end of the reservoir stopping any overtaking on the decent straight and then up from the Snake Inn on the other long straight bit.

Usually vans, I have seen the odd marked car

You can request photographic evidence to help identify the driver. When I got a NIP it already had photo's and it was bleeding obvious who was driving!

Well that explains a lot, didn't appreciate just how unscrupulous the police had become with fake builders vans! Maybe we should have the high visibility stickers and blue lights from their vehicles on our cars? No?..... 😋

If they did it from a helicopter, it's definitely worth the effort to get the photos, haha.

It's the only safe stretch to overtake!

it's the camera partnerships that run the revenue generating cameras, and if an actual Police officer catches you speeding it's usually just a stern talking to.
The camera partnerships wouldn't run a helicopter because it wouldn't be profitable, IIRC they cost about £1500 per hour to run in terms of fuel, staff, insurance, etc. So that a lot of speeding fines per hour before it so much as breaks even..........

Well an infinite number seeing as how the Police get nothing at all from fines, or even fixed penalties.....

???
Why would that matter? Makes no difference whether the police get anything or not. The money goes somewhere.

Clearly, even if it were otherwise practical to use a helicopter, the cost would require a hell of a lot of hits to cover it.

You've missed the points, the hits will never cover it as far as the police are concerned as they get nothing from fines or fixed penalties.

They both go to 'central funds' (the treasury) and as its unbudgeted revenue it just reduces the deficit a little.

As for any other crime the Police work is funded by the local government then there is no concept of 'break even' in any other policing, just the same.

I'm talking about the camera partnerships, which are companies privately run for profit, some of that money goes to the ACPO, but it mostly goes into those camera partnerships own profit. I won't speculate as to who exactly runs or holds shares in those companies, but the money probably ends up with high ranking Police, politicians, etc.

On top of that they're in bed with the private companies that run the speed awareness courses.

biggrin HE HE, many years ago did over 65 on my pedal bike (freewheeling!) down the snake pass - would be fun to see the 'speeding ticket' for doing that
