This will depend on a few factors which are probably best not discussed openly as they are still contracted to their nominated repairer.

How do they get round the manufacturers stipulation that calibration of safety systems are required after screen replacement? For instance the front camera - if you have a triangular cutout housing a camera you have 'front camera' - used for traffic sign recognition, lane keep assist, PDLS+.

At centres; when we replace a screen on equipped cars the camera needs to be calibrated. If we can vouch that the vehicle alignment is correct then you are good to go but if the car has been driven k's of miles you can't and it opens up the need for geo and steering angle sensor calibration which then leads to calibration of other systems; ACC, LCA, surround view.

Generally the insurance companies are covering this as far as I can tell.

I had a chat with someone in the business the other day about this. Some windscreen replacement firms went mobile only, purely to cut costs I think. But they will now have to get indoor premises again due to the calibration required on systems that control following car in front, lane assist etc. Or else not do cars with these fitted!

If the system / camera is damaged by the stones or by shock damage of a screen cracking, I too wonder if this will be covered by a windscreen 'only' claim.

Surely insurers will cover themselves for camera alignment within the overall premium charged?

Chat to someone else in from another corner of the industry and you'll get a different version.

Yes.

Reading fit them themselves; don't sub-out.

I know others that do; Swindon for example - but the camera calibration et al are additional considerations nonetheless

Blimey Paul, I was just about to suggest you.

OP, if you need the job done properly, Glassman here is the only man to ask.

I've known him for years and he's done some excellent work on the couple of my cars.

Yes, he's a rotten Gooner. But, as a windscreen guy there is absolutely none better.

Highly recommended.

I tried to squeeze myself into that Stratos; when I eventually positioned myself I didn't know whether to drive it... or wear it.

I'll add my support for Glassman.... As mentioned, I may have got a great fitter at the OPC, but as I could not be sure, I am very glad Paul did mine.

So to update everyone...

Admiral weren't being very helpful, even when it came to me using my own specialist and reimbursing me £50. In the end I took a deep breathe and got autoglass to do it.

The glass is identical to what they removed, there is no damage to the car that I can see and generally speaking the windscreen is fitted OK. However upon closer inspection one side of the windscreen is too high and does not sit under the plastic scuttle tray at the bottom.

It's only off by 2mm and it probably won't cause any problems, but it annoys me on principle. I don't know, maybe I am being naive, having never fitted a windscreen.

The scuttle may need moving along by a few mm. The two yellow arrows shows the misaligned track.

There should also be a plastic tab which hooks under the windscreen (circled) to keep it all flush against the glass.

Thanks for that Paul.

The scuttle looks to be in the same position in my before photos, except further up the screen. Either way I can't get it to budge, its certainly secured very tight.

Get them to re-do it.

Might mean another new screen. Tough for them.

I've had AG replace a screen they fitted soon after. I was rippled in the driver's view.

Phone then tomorrow. Start with "I'm not happy..."
