New Safari 911 Targa Build
Discussion
Hi All,
thought I would share with you my new build project. Over the last year, I've got a bit jaded with new cars with flappy paddle gearboxes, electric steering and huge easy to curb alloys and started hunting around for something a bit different. Something that was analogue, a bit classic, but could make my own. Something that was fun at any speed and could take to any events. Something not so expensive so that I couldn't use it wherever or what ever the weather. And something convertible.....
Mmmmm quite a tall order I hear you say. Some might say impossible... Having had quite a number of 911s, I started to think about what I could do. And Wham - I happened upon a 'Drive' video for a Safari type 911 and my mind was set.
After many hours crawling the web - I decided how hard could it be to do a Targa Safari ?
The idea as is often does was mulled over and put aside for more pressing matters until an alert pinged up on ebay a 911 Targa S from 1977 came up at an absolute steal of a price in the arse end of Wales. I thought - its probably a fraud, but why not give them a call and find out more...I spoke to the chap who owned it - he sounded genuine having owned it for 9 years. It was stripped down, the bodywork had been completed in primer, the engine was rebuilt a couple of years earlier. I could not believe my luck...
After a couple of hasty conversations with Ty at Riviera Autobody near Wallingford, a plan was hatched of what to check for and a plan was hatched...
The next day I set off for deepest Wales ready to be disappointed... It was on a crate at the back of a dry warehouse unit and had been there for 7 years or so... I checked all parts - they all seemed to be there is various places and conditions, called the garage who rebuilt the engine - who confirmed the work. And like that without a second thought - I transfered the cash.
Pick up day, and 4 burley men were provided by the owner to help stack and remove all the items, 4 hours later
the car was after a fairly unsettling moment with a forklift, the car and engine were safely on their way - pack to the gunnels with parts. I was was on my way with a Range Rover with no more than 10mm of space left in it departed Wales - Reading bound.
The following day it arrived in Wallingford - and the enormity of the task in hand stared to dawn on me.
However with a bit of Photoshopping and playing around I put together an image of what I might be able to create and the project started...
I will try to give an update a week to show the progress of the build but that's all for today

Yes! Good man!
Watching this thread with interest
I am sure you are already aware but Matt Farrah from Drive is currently building his own Safari 911 and Tuthill have a WEALTH of experience with building Safari 911's.
Good luck with your project.
I know - thats the one that started me wanting one... Unfortunately the chap who builds them Leh Keen only builds cars for the USA and No Targas - so I will need to build my own and its going to look Dope... - please excuse the quality of the render.... Watching this thread with interest

I hope your interior will be sparse and purposeful as it will soon be full of mud and dust Cant wait to hear more about this build.
Its been a while and a few things have moved on somewhat.
So I thought I would give you guys an update. Suspension on, its brand new Elephant Racing bilsteins with a 4 inch lift.
The brakes have also gone on, standard discs and pads from Tuthills. The rack and handbrake have also been fitted.
The new bearings and new poly- bush goodness have also been fitted. The oil lines are in as is the loom, the oil tank also is in.
The alternator has been fully reconditioned
So I now have a rolling shell. The engine is now off to be fully rebuilt - I bought a 3.0 sc and this will now be rebuilt using EBS racing 98mm pistons and cylinders and uprated cams to produce a 3.2 short stroke engine - running on the standard bosch injection with SSI exhaust and K & Ns - hopefully will produce around 240-260 BHP according to the engine builder bible...
All exterior chrome items have been nickeled a la Singer
Interior is finished - will give pics in the next post
