Something very special about an aircooled hot rod that cant be replicated in later cars. Dont believe all that you read, they are not all about to fall apart. Make sure that you drive a good one before you make your mind up. In fact, try to get a drive in all of the potentials if you can
That does look spot on!
Everytime I see this pic I want a 964 again. Looks so low and hard as nails. I can't believe thats not too harsh for road use but amazing how advanced damper/tyre tech is nowadays which really brings these cars alive smile

991 GT3 is quite small still imo over say a Lambo or the 600lt , even a 4c is wider !!

next to my Golf the GT3 still looks a small car, a Performante is what 40 cm wider ! or some thing daft.
Which model Golf do you run alongside your Porsches?

Clubsport , it’s a great drive, reminds me of my Clio Trophy.
Has short shift, engine mounts and had the torque delimited as I have a right foot:-)

Good cars. My daily driver was a toss up between the clubsport and M2. Went the M2 route in the end

The damping and body control are actually very good. Damping technology has really moved on over the past 10 years or so. The 964 rides bumps much better than my 997GT3 in ‘soft’ mode. The uncompromising element of my build is the geo set up which is very sharp. That’s easily changed. With a blunt set up the car would be very docile.

if you were to read up about the car it's already had a glass out repaint !

one would just need photo's of the work done to confirm the quality.

The problem is that these things often rust from the inside out. And once it breaks through you are fooked.

after running these all side by side + just swapping the GT4 out the 981 Spyder was the least fun, I expect the older car to over take the newer cars values which might make the 981 a nice buy to mod to 425bhp later on in life, but NOT over a 987.2 Spyder in any way.
As with all 981 the steering feel and gearing ruin the cars.
I ran it as a daily in 2018 for 10 months and through winter though and we had a great summer for it, I enjoyed it, but it's very flawed vs the other cars and GT4 imo.
Was my other half's fav car though, and imo it is more a lifestyle car over a drivers car.

I also sold my R (after driving 5 years 2 models and >30k miles in them) so kept the 991.2 GT3 and 987.2 Spyder, seemed the best pair to own.
This was the highlight of my fleet, never to be repeated owning these 4 all at the same time shame the GT4's not there and not a Auto in site :-)

Beautiful!

I definitely think the 987's are the lookers of the quartet.
I'd love a GT3 but love the looks of the 987 also, of course I am biased. However, the older I get the more I feel that overtly aggressive designs don't age so well. In 20 years time I can see the current RS generation of car being looked back on as a bit naff compared to the classic lines of say a GT3 Touring.

Discussed this thread with a mate last night. He owns an independent Porsche servicing business. His choice is a 964 (he has a nice one), and he reckons that running costs on the 964 and 993 are less than on a 996 and newer.

He also said that suspension wear and tear is something to look out for on older cars, and that unless a car is very low mileage a 964 is unlikely to have original paint, so check carefully for corrosion that may have been hidden. His parting shot, there are lots out there that are dogs

Looks so nice that. Off topic browsing through the classifieds and look whet else you can buy for £45k. I wouldn't swap my air cooled for one but thats a lot of car for the money. Same dealer looks like they have a 964 coming in but no pics yet.

As I said earlier in this thead I was in exactly the same situation as you around six months ago. Same budget and use case. I too looked at R8 V10s. A lot of car for the money but the potential running expenses put me off in the end. I wanted a car I could put back under manufacturer’s warranty for stress free motoring. Audi want the guts of 3K pa for an R8 V10, almost 3 times the cost of the Porsche equivalent.

I also considered a V8 Vantage but thought it was a bit too ‘old man’ for me. One for the future.

As much as the R8 offers a lot of car for the money, it's not really for me. Too big and bulky,

Being sensible it's 987 Spyder or 4C. The 987 is by far the better package but the 4C is perhaps a little more special and can be improved relatively cheaply. Just about finding the right car at the right price.

A 964 or 993 are in the mix too if I happen upon the right example.

4C...good choice. Try to find the Anniversary Spider, has all the nice bits added to the interior like leather dash/seats and carbon bits and then all the other bits like sports exhaust/suspension on the outside. There will be a load on the market in May/June when the lease cars start returning so good choice then maybe. I have one but will be buying mine as long as it's sensible money. Can't think of anything that special for budget which is so easily tuned and improved.
