New Razr misses the point
Discussion
The new Motorola Razr details came out yesterday. I was partly excited. Partly because there is no way I'm paying the estimated price, but I'm really keen for a clam shell smartphone. No more cases / screen protectors. We can go back to casually tossing our phones on the table, or in your pocket without fear of cracking or scratching the massive screen. A much better use of folding screens than Samsung's take on it (phone becomes tablet) , imho.
And then I see the final product. They've put an extra screen on the outside..... :-(((

i dont think a lot of people were throwing their phones around, just because they had a clamshell design
No but you know what I mean. We now all have to have screen protectors / rubberised cases, wallet cases. Anything to stop them breaking. Whereas in the past they was much less screen, or, a clamshell.I was really looking forward to a design that enclosed the screen.
The Razr did indeed have a miniscule screen on the front - I forgot that.
I watched MKBHD's video from the launch event - he had a few good complaints about it being the most dimly lit hands-on event he's ever attended so it was difficult to actually have a proper good look at it/to record the video, but he says he's getting one on release purely for the form factor!
The screen on the outside is because there's no selfie cam when you open it, you use the main camera for both hence the external screen. Battery life isn't going to be great, it's just over 2500ish-mAh, although the screen resolution might help as it's something like 2480 x 850 or thereabouts (can't remember exactly, but do remember thinking that's a bit weird?)

a screen on the outside of a clamshell became pretty much the standard, it would have been really weird if they didn't have one.
Before that the clamshell tended to flip down and only cover the keypad. Phones where the screen was completely covered were not popular, because you could not see who was calling before opening, which would normally automatically accept the call.

I have fond memories of my various Razr's over the years, I like this and if I wasn't already in bed with Apple I'd seriously consider it.
Same here. Had several Razrs but now IPhone X and lots of other Apple stuff as well as CarPlay so just too much bother to change. Years since I worried about integration RogerDodger said:

I don't have a screen protector or a rubberised case. I never have had, and I've never damaged one of my phones.I was really looking forward to a design that enclosed the screen.

My Razr's hinge broke after about six months.

The majority of people have at least a screen protector. Those that don't seem to be iphone users who just live with a cracked screen.
I can't make a phone screen last a month with out using a case, and pretty much everyone I know is in the same boat. In fact a friend tried "going naked" a while back as he really wanted the phone to look and feel as it was designed. Lasted around 2 months before he cracked the screen.
I park on gravel. One drop face down and it's game over. I've done it too :-(
I'm definitely now warming to the external screen idea. Forgot all about the original's external screen. Still way too expensive though

I think I can honestly say, in 30 years, I've never dropped a mobile phone.
Realistically, that can't be true, but none have ever sustained any damage.

I've never had a screen protector and I don't see the point of having a screen protector. A good case with raised edges around screen is enough. The majority of people have at least a screen protector. Those that don't seem to be iphone users who just live with a cracked screen.
I'm never had a screen protector or a case on any of my mobys either. The only time I've ever damaged a phone was when I ran over it and no amount of screen protectors would have saved it.
Plus, the latest glass is so scratch resistant I can't see how you can ever scratch it. Just make sure you keep it in a pocket with nothing else.
