I think it’s a Porsche thing. I’ve had a few similar experiences in my GT3 and GT4’s. Interestingly though in 4 years of blasting around in my bright blue R8 with a massive “wang” not a single problem.
The other point to consider is that lovely as they are a GT4 just isn’t that quick, especially spluttering round dragging it’s awful gearing with it. Most chavs in their chipped 335D or Golf R fancy their chances. They probably have the brainpower to defer to a real super car.
Interesting point is that my 2 718 Spyders have both been met with universal admiration. Genuinely I have never owned a car which got such a positive response. Odd really it’s the same car under the skin, just one is very shouty and the other is very svelte.

Never had so much as one before in my TVRs or Lotus, .
Me neither, (3 Chimaera, 2 Wedges, 2 Lotus Excels, an S4 Elan and a Caterham over the years)
Finding more and more people come up and tell me how lovely the car (whichever) is.

Here's me considering an older 986 S.

Thank you for your replies, some amusing anecdotes as well some not so. It seems I'm not alone in being the target for Porsche hate.

One thing does ring true though, none of the people who have given me grief have been driving, what I would call 'a nice car'. They have either been old hot hatches, white vans or Nissan Micra types that don't like being overtaken by noisy cars.

From the looks point of view, having a wing may put a target on your back to some drivers. I also have a GT04 *** plate which might label me as being a bit of a spod. The car colour is gentian blue with aurum wheels, which I was unsure about when I bought the car but actually it looks pretty cool but to others may look a bit blingy.

My driving has been pretty sedate, since I have been running the car in and have had to wait quite a while for the ppf to be applied. I don't therefore think it is my driving. So I'm in aggreement with those that concluded that it is the envious, jealous types which I will be looking over my shoulder for. I can handle the goading etc on the road but my worry is leaving the car unattended in a public place which is bound to happen at some point. C

Wow, five pages. I actually found Porsche a massive improvement. People even let me out of junctions for the first time ever.

I used to drive an Audi… laugh

What colour is it? Gentian blue is very conservative, great colour. I could imagine lava orange or yellow getting jealousy but not a neutral colour. Fk ‘em…

Wouldn't say Gentian is a shouty colour at all it looks relatively low key like Agate grey in normal dull UK light.

Gave up leaving attractive cars parked up a good number of years back unfortunately there are way too many jealous wkers around now who will readily damage or key your pride and joy. Always take a snotter if parking up in towns etc esp at weekends.

Worst incident was a teenage wker who threw a stone at my Guards red Carrera T whilst parked up on a private car park a few years back. Having witnessed the stone hitting the rear nearside wing and leaving a substantial dent with paint damage I had to seriously restrain myself from kicking the st out of said scrote having realised it would be me labelled the criminal and arrested if he or his family called the police and pressed charges. Just had to bite my tongue and suck it up.

The law truly is an ass in some areas especially where 'minors' are concerned.

I had a boggo base model 2.7 986 for 5 years and only ever got shouted at once - whilst sat with the top down at some lights by some stereotype "empty Ginsters wrapper and copy of the Sun on the dash" white van knuckle draggers next to me "Poor Man's Porsche! On your way to the Salon mate?" etc etc

I just ignored it and watched them congratulating themselves on their undoubted comedic genius.....as they sputtered off in a 1 litre Fiesta van.... tongue outrofl

Did once find a scrawled "meat and two veg" on the bonnet dust once too. Actually made me snigger briefly before I washed it off.

I drive a 22 year old blue Subaru, with gold wheels, and a big rear wing. I’ve had nothing but compliments so far.

I think it’s a “new car/flashy car” thing.

The OP has certainly got the juices flowing with this thread. Lots of very pertinent views, far to many to multi quote. I have driven 911's since 2016 and experienced a number of road related exchanges. What is universally different is driving your Porsche in Germany. In ten years of Euro trips to Spa and the Nordschleife not one single altercation with a fellow germanian.
I wonder if Napoleon Solo had similar experiences? smile

You are no doubt much prettier than me. But I didn't feel particularly comfortable driving it, unlike most other cars I have had - If doing it again, I won't go for a loud colour that's for sure..!

My boggo looking 996 literally gets very little reaction which I much prefer. Life's too short for this kind of st.
You’re a big wuss Sidey, I’d always suspected… laugh

Zero interest (good or bad) in my meteor grey GT3 apart from a few enthusiasts that know about the model. Same applied for my grey 996 Turbo.

I think it's a colour / area thing. In bournemouth it's common sight to see modern day R8's/Ferrari's. I also think its part of the beauty of owning the older stuff, my GT3 could just be an aerokitted carrera to the untrained eye.

OP, such a shame about the negative responses, just envy.

I had a black 718 GT4 for two years and used it as my daily, I don’t remember any negative attention, maybe oblivious but I do remember a lot of positive attention. Maybe we remember what we want to remember!

The only negative attention I remember in a Porsche was in my gentian blue (maybe it’s the colour!) 992 Carrera S when I stopped to let two people cross the road and in response I got a wave from one and a very prominent middle finger from the other. Different reactions from different people!

Enjoy it and hopefully it doesn’t detract from your experience of a great car!

It is a thing unfortunately frown

Even an old, silver, base 987.1B, no stickers, no wings, isn't immune. Must be worse in a GT4.

Sad state of affairs.

Much better in a Maserati smile

One incident in particular for me stands out. I was driving back from a euro trip and got back to folkestone and driving up the m20 in my black ferrari f430 and it was dark winter night, someone was tailgating me then he got past me and actually was slowing right down to 30 on the motorway including slowing traffic behind me. I thought he was in danger of tyring to ram me and with multiple speed cameras on that road, I couldn't dissappear off easily. I checked waze for the cameras and decided to floor it and left him behind for a distance whilst I then slotted in between 2 trucks to make it impossible for him to block me. I have no idea what caused this loony aggressive behaviour but I aim to be alert to issues like this most times when I go out.

Most of the times in London never had any problems in my cars, my 996turbo in silver with aero kit had a few hand gestures.
As other mentioned above, I'm very careful where I take the car ie. No poor areas of London. thankfully I'm now usually driving it down west Sussex, Surrey way and there seems to be a bit less boy racers about

Two observations, both of which seem to be reinforced by other peoples experiences and the OPs own experience with a 981s. [flame suit engaged]

1. I doubt if more than 2.5% of the motoring public know what a GT4 is.
Many more may know what a Porsche is, but most cannot differentiate between 911 model years, let alone a halo specification.

2. People react to what they see (NOT what they actually know)
And that is a brightly coloured Porsche with an usually loud exhaust and what looks like an aftermarket eBay special spoiler, especially if fitted with the taller risers that also seem popular on FB.

When you consider that the only time the vast majority of the 97.5% of the public have seen anything like that before, it’s likely to have been some base model chariot Barried up to look like a budget DTM racer. So their first reaction is likely…. “Why has that bloke ruined a perfectly decent sports car with all that Tat”.

Yes there WILL be a very small number of people envious because, someone in a Porsche is passing by on the same day that they find out that their wife has been having sex with an old female friend from school. But that is the outlier.

In the vast majority of cases it will be driven by ignorance (of the cars existence) rather than hate.

It's happening virtually everytime I drive the car and it's spoiling the enjoyment, which believe me is hard to do. What worrys me is, if there is this much aggression on the road what's going to happen when I park it up unattended??

PS Just went out to see if the tracker was working and got cut up furious

1970's: a lad I worked with broke down in Backworth which was a small mining town on the edges of Tyneside. Was getting goaded by a group of young scrotes while under the bonnet fixing car. Turns around, patience exhausted and clouted one of them.
Spent the rest of the night in the local cop shop and in court the next morning.
He was such a placid guy normally too so must have been really testing him.

I think colour plays a big part, as well as the F off spoiler. Ex boss of mine had several Porsches with no problem. A couple of days in a Viper Green Boxster courtesy car and he swore never to have a loud colour Porsche. Final straw was returning to the car in town to find someone had been sick over the bonnet and roof.

On the flip side, unbelievable appreciation of stand out cars in California. I had a yellow Camaro convertible, positive comments everyday. Even in the Walmart car park, a lady with kids shouts "hey, you guys are stylin'". Not sure you'd get the same in ASDA over here.

Quite true, I'm still quite self conscious driving my Gentian Blue Taycan as a daily and often have to go into some pretty dodgy areas to look at projects, the ones that do notice tend to just stare at it, the kids will sometimes actually shout out something, nearly always positive, but to be honest not always welcome if I'm trying to slip under the radar to park up and spend 20 mins looking around without getting my car keyed or into an awkward conversation.

I do find that the vast majority don't care about cars, the colour or the noise is more obnoxious than the badge. As an example yesterday I travelled to a site and the manager had to let me in through a security gate, I thought, here we go another comment on my flash car as I witter on about EV's and tax saving laugh when I arrived on the phone to him to get access, he said "Is that you in the Mazda?" hehe and he wasn't being funny, he's not that kind of guy!

I had this "issue" as well when I went from Leon Cupra to 981 Cayman S.

Lots of people tailgating, pulling out on me etc.
