Still puzzled about the Taycan figures:

761 just before Christmas
135 today

526 sold (not including cars built and sold to order)
Sold or just registered and parked in a yard somewhere?

My guess is the latter

It seems that there are huge numbers of pre registered cars from multiple manufacturers stacking up

I was reading a report that ports across Europe are running out of space to store cars as there are literally 10’s thousands of unsold cars sitting around

I have also seen stacks of cars in dealerships (Audi/Vw)yards which are visible from the road still with some of the factory wrapping and 73 plates on.
They either stop producing or start heavily discounting! No other way to shift

Just had a quick look at VW - here is their search New Available Stock page - https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/en/new/available-stoc...

It lists 8185 vehicles as available! That seems.... a lot!

I regularly pass the large house of a chap that owns a Skoda/seat dealership

Over the last couple of months his drive and field at the back of his place have filled up with cars as above many still with wrapping on them

Passed there this morning, I reckon there must be 50+ cars on the site/field behind

The dealer is about 5 miles away and the forecourt is rammed with stuff and presumably they have other storage without having to put cars on his drive

In many years of passing the place I’ve never seen this before

A purely speculative theory regarding all these stockpiled cars:

Any sensible business buys in stock using previous seasonal knowledge eg: a restaurant will buy in more supplies approaching a national holiday; a sportscar dealer will buy in more stock ready for the Spring buying season.

But the motor trade now has a new curveball to try and hedge regarding stock: EVs. We've all seen the headlines re sales falling off a cliff due to many varying factors, might it be that dealers stockpiling certain new cars covers them either way if the wheels continue to fall off the EV market - especially privately owned EVs?

As in, whatever happens, either with govt mandates (which can change on a whim), interest rates, electricity prices, cost of living hitting people's pockets etc etc they have varied stock to sell and can price accordingly going forward? There's also the prospect of future supply chain issues with ongoing worldwide geopolitical uncertainty, so maybe it's simply a case of a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush?

Eyeing up a pre-reg Cayman, chances for a 5-10% discount in this environment or should I still expect a no chance it's a Porsche response?

Alternatively manufacturers are making lots of cars no one wants and they are either being punted out to dealers (who can’t sell them) or being “dumped” at ports/storage areas

If it’s a new pre registered car ie >99miles on the clock I would aim for at least 15% off list! There has been cars on their site with discounts.

I managed 5% off a factory order 911 last October. I’m sure you could get more off something pre-reg.

apparently a big number of cars that are sitting in ports around europe are chinese ev. they dont have the dealer networks yet to sell them, but once they do they will be heavily discounting to clear the backlog. will only add to the problems of other manufacturers who have stock piling up when they start selling with big discounts to move stock.

Is anyone on here actually working in a dealership as a salesman/woman? Can anyone actually say if their sales are down etc.

Regarding the comment on Chinese EV's, when BYD fully roll out here they will go heavy so i agree there will be big discounting coming.

We don't need a shiny suited sales droid to tell us that, the SMMT has us covered there

So, down 20% YoY. And that includes any that are "sold" so the real number of customers driving off the forecourt might well be less than that.

Maybe a tame shiny suit could shed some light on that angle, but I'd be surprised.

probably opc's pre registering cars again. they are pushing to register as many cars this month as possible. a friend had his new car arrive yesterday at opc and they have been on his case today, to get it paid for by monday so they can register this month.

im sure i read the ceo making a statement a few months back, that the economic climate wouldnt affect them as thay had a strong customer base lol

They need to be careful as may end up with a visit from planning enforcement if it’s a private dwelling being used for car storage.
