Ah, I dont mind that one.. as it’s what he does for a living, essentially a pro, and he was in the ‘big bad’ of the time.

Serious question, looking at the dry laps (not the ones in the rain at first minute of video) where the hell am I losing 10-15 seconds on the lap?

My thoughts:
  • Shell Oils hairpin line
  • Missing 1st apex of Druids
  • Braking too early for Old Hall
(Tyres pretty fked, so that last one I was getting a lot of ABS and had a bit to do with that last point.)

No ego here so be as blunt and forthright as you like. I will not be upset. biggrin
I think missing the first apex of Druids is actually the correct line wink

I know it’s from a few years ago, and a VERY clear lap, but hope this helps…

Edit: that is a bone stock 996.2 GT3 BTW Standard dampers etc. just Pagid pads

Sorry Marcus
All of them brake to early, accelerate to late corner speed to low. Your car is capable of more.
This guy is quick in a 997.1 I used it for reference

None taken. thumbup

Yes, he must be pretty quick, following Mike at Sports & Classic in blue 996.2 GT3 for a while and he's not slow.

The video back-to-back is also very useful to see the score. I don't need a 3.8 engine after all. hehe

Maybe need one of those Teletex things TDT has.

Primarily I think you just need to use more of what the car already has, as others have said.... more revs and more harder, later braking.
Look like you are consciously driving well within yourself and within the car... so you could easily drop 5secs just by using more revs and getting a bit deeper into the braking zones. Of course this means sharpening up on shifting and rev-matching (I'm not saying yours is poor btw - just that you'll need to be on top of it) and then there is added stress or potential risk to the drivetrain.... but it just depends on what you want to do, at the end of the day these car are built for it.

Admittedly, it is easier to push harder in the later cars as they have some tricks to help you such as auto-rev matching for manuals... or completely automated gear selection in the case of PDKs.

I tend to find the rev matching is sort of easier the harder you brake.

I think, with fresh rubber, I just need to be working tyres harder. There are other tracks where I think I do a better job, maybe because I visit them in warmer weather. So perhaps another Oulton day later in the year is also an idea.

In the car, I cannot replicate the recklessness I have on a mountain bike. Yet. If I could channel my 'no brakes' 29.6mph rocky, rooty single track, twighlight Lakes descent from December, I'd be flying.

Marcus, in the vid I posted above you can hear my tyres chirping under braking quite a bit. There is a lot of time to be made up just in that area, I think. And maybe taking some more curb etc

Nice work!

At what stage of development was your GT4 at back then?

Don;t get depression.

Unfortunately, don't get any faster either. 2'08" seems pretty stable for me there. hehe

And the reason I stopped timing (even for reference) was that it was getting harder to get faster. Now I think I'm getting slower, so I measure each day on a fun scale which includes cars seen / conversations had / tussles enjoyed / experiences shared .... I also no longer insure on track so I'm planning to be on the safe side of pushing boundaries.

Maybe I am becoming too "grown up" !! smile

Was that the day when after the second attempt to turn-in at Druid's I had to make a big lift to bring the tail around and went around the second part of Druids with only the drivers side wheels still on the circuit ? After which I came in and waved at you as you came past me out of Deers Leap ?

The car had had the rear toe links done, KW 3-way Clubsports and Surface Transform discs ... otherwise it was standard ...

A day of two very different halves in terms of weather, but exemplary driving etiquette throughout IMHO. Huge mix of cars and drivers in terms of speed and ability but everyone seemed to be looking out for one another.

First minute or so in one of the very cold, wet and slippy morning sessions. Rest shows just how nicely it dried out for the afternoon. Happy days.

I’d agree with a number of the comments, good clean driving but generally a bit conservative. One specific is that you could definitely build your entry speeds and in a number of places that would be easier if you turned in a little earlier; Cascades for sure, a bit at Island and a chunk at Shell as well. For context, I used to work for the circuit and have raced there a fair bit.

Next time you book a trackday get an hour with the instructor, if you find someone you get on with then have a chat with them about private coaching if the budget and enthusiasm allows, you have some good safe gains available there beer

I did have some coaching a good few years ago there. It would make sense to push things forward a bit.

your cup tyres fall off a cliff in time gained especially as how old and worn they are /were, generally you do drive by the seat of your pants as regards to feel,i bet your tyres were way off as every heat cycle they fall off against the clock.
Local coaching is always usefull, oulton dont take many prisoners if you get it wrong.

Checking my records, tyres were fitted at the end of Jan 2022. So they have done their bit.

I do find I push more at places with fewer consequences, but also that if tyres and track temperature allow, I know I could easily do more at Oulton. I don't worry about the barriers because compared to the speeds/exposure at the 'Ring, it's actually not too bad.
