How not to do it!…

Did some quick and dirty lap time calcs on recent and older Oulton vids, the newer stuff is just so quick.

Did a 1:50 (just) in the afternoon (in the 991). Will try and see what I did last year in the 996 but it was at least 6+ seconds behind that from memory. Dave O’B in his 996 is just superb

I only purchased this in November and this was my first track day in it.

A day of two very different halves in terms of weather, but exemplary driving etiquette throughout IMHO. Huge mix of cars and drivers in terms of speed and ability but everyone seemed to be looking out for one another.

First minute or so in one of the very cold, wet and slippy morning sessions. Rest shows just how nicely it dried out for the afternoon. Happy days.
Serious question, looking at the dry laps (not the ones in the rain at first minute of video) where the hell am I losing 10-15 seconds on the lap?

My thoughts:
  • Shell Oils hairpin line
  • Missing 1st apex of Druids
  • Braking too early for Old Hall
(Tyres pretty fked, so that last one I was getting a lot of ABS and had a bit to do with that last point.)

No ego here so be as blunt and forthright as you like. I will not be upset. biggrin

Loving all the onboard on this thread, must get my Cayman up to Oulton this year.

Regarding your laps Digga looks like your corner entry speeds could be higher, comparing to the 996 GT3 video that is. Could be braking and turning in much later, and using move revs, looks like your short shifting in places?

Digga, I'd agree with the above re braking later and much harder and maxing out the revs but next time we are on track together, let's do some pax laps. Easier to show in car. Re my times, it's worth explaining that I have raced quite a bit at Oulton as well as being in a PDK equipped 991.2 with ceramics, so I suspect if you were in my car, you'd easily find 10 seconds

You can use a video doubler service like this to compare laps and sectors, here is your lap vs DOB

https://www.videodoubler.com/combo/saved/313388e9-...

Have a play with the start times for each vid (in seconds) to see each sector - very handy.

Sorry Marcus
All of them brake to early, accelerate to late corner speed to low. Your car is capable of more.

Hi all,

Forgot my old login from 2006!!

Thanks for the kind words, met some old faces in Oulton and new ones too, inc the driver of the 991.2 in my video who was a gent.

None of my laps were perfect by any means, lots of room to improve. Will be in Donnington for St Patrick’s RMA day, hopefully meet some of you there..

Cheers
Dave OB

First time back at the RS day since 2019 and had a blast, mixed conditions muchos fun.

A few vids....

Some great driving there Jevvy, really showcases how good these older cars are. It seems to have really good front end grip, very impressive.
