what do i replace a quick modified s4 with? obvious choice would be a turbo but in my mind for 5 times the cost of the audi it should be, well, a bit more 'special'. did i really just say that? gt3, not convinced it is that fast compared, on paper at least. now remember reading about the gt2 in evo, it described the acceleration as an assault on the senses, easily and cheaply modified and relatively rare - mmm perfect. then i read about others dillema between gt3rs and gt2 and the rs seems to win every time. now im really stuck. i cant really afford to lose it so i'll keep my scum track car, which makes the 996 a road car with the occasional bedford gt thrown in, in which case surely i'd be better off with the safety net of the turbo, esp as the girlfriend will be using it too. arghhhhhhhh. maybe an x50 or amd turbo, funny thats the sensible but boring choice haha

Turbo is a great car, maybe consider Gt3 with comfort seat spec....but you have hit the nail on the head...They do not make sense at 5x the price and worse build quality, practicality and the stealth effect of the S4.
One of things that you have to do to get out of your system

If its just going to be a road car then get a standard C2 & progress up the 996 range if you enjoy the C2.

I had a modified Sti Impreza then went to a C2 at 3x the price of the Scooby but never missed it or questioned my decision for a second, and point to point the C2 lost nothing to the Scooby, the C2 was slightly slower to 80mph but faster 80mph+

You can level the argument about any car...is a C2 really £20k more of a car than a Boxster S.....is a Turbo really £30k more of a car than a C2.....is a McLaren F1 really 7x more of a car than a Turbo etc etc.

You are right about the figures - reading the specs, the GT3 doesn't seem as if it will be as fast as the GT2 or the Turbo. However, for most people it really is considerably faster (and safer than a GT2) on the track. On the road, the turbo (or indeed the cooking 911) may well be the more comfortable/practical option.

To settle it, go and test-drive a GT3 - either a standard car, or an RS (depending upon whether you can live with the colour scheme - if you were a Scooby driver, you might well be able to ).

Depending upon the sort of person you are, and whether you can wipe the grin from your face (!), that will probably settle the matter, and this thread will kinda dry up....

GT2's arent called the widow maker for nothing
GT3's i think are the best Porsche in the 996 range, if you want a fun weekend car, you'll love it, they're a car you have to concentrate on to drive, a little bit like a TVR , you cant get sat nav on a GT3, why? because by the time you entered the destination you'd be in a ditch
I couldn't live with a white car with halfords stripes,
if you drove a gt3 youd think an ordinary turbo was a Big boxster
but if you drive one you'll want it

nah i want something really special, and faster than the s4, which means its gotta be significantly faster than a c2. wouldn't consider a 'non gt1 block' engined car anyway. god i love the rs but hate to imagine driving round crappy pot holed speed bumped london streets in it and it aint exactly stealthy.

Frank, it's gotta be the GT2 - especially at the levels they're at now (sub 60k!!!). Remember that Fearns's mysterious all-black 680bhp GT2/C2 narrow body will be coming back from the rough boys soon and he won't keep it for long before succumbing to someone's cash

and, in my mind at least more special, esp rs

it is pretty embarrasing, especially with a wing BAe would be proud of strapped on the back. luckily my annonymity is guaranteed with a burburry balaclava.

Thats the way I look at it Francis,,S4 makes a great road car,,,you can then go for a slightly more extreme or compromised Porker for track and weekend fun.
For me just getting back into normal road going porsche just seems dull....much better to get a class A fix of Zuffenhausens finest when you can.

Just get a boggo GT2 then, if there is such a beast.

Then swap the S4 for an RS6, compatible with the kids and labrador. Or maybe a new M5 in touring guise

Fast cars just don't do it for me anymore. I must be getting old. I like my nice comfy merc with its slushomatic box. Frank is a tad younger than me, so he can drive the GT2 to MaccyDs and hang out with the burburry massive.

When I get really old I'll buy myself a Morgan

I have still got a Porsche

After the Baron finally disappears I'll spend the next decade sorting the Ultima/BMW then quite fancy something along the lines of a GT3RS, 997GT3, Cayman RS (if they make one) or (if I have made a million or three in the mean time) a Carrera GT.

Good, have you decided to hang on to the Baron now it is done? I hope so.

I thought you said in the past you sold it to Mr Fearns?

ok so when the dealers are showing a £70k offer on an rs or gt2 whats the real price? how bad is the market at the moment? also is there any seasonality, are these chaps cheaper in deepest darkest january/febuary due to weather or more expensive due to city bonuses?

No, it is still going to Andy. It is quite a complicated contra-deal involving an Ultima engine and BMW parts/labour. The deal has been ongoing for months - we have played ping pong with the V5 for years now. He will end up with it, but I wish I could afford to keep it. Quite a legend!!!!

OPC or not? Also theres a fairly wide spread on these cars at the moment. Some GT2s seem to be massively overpriced.

As to what dealers will take, it depends on how desperate they are to get shot of the car. Some have rules about turning stock over in x weeks etc, and then start to discount until its gone. Really you need to negotiate yourself and perhaps speak to multiple dealers asking what the best they can do is baring in mind you've seen one at x somewhere else etc....
