I personally would do some serious calcualtions regarding

1) how much the performance kit is really worth (esp come resale)

2) what the depreication curve is likely to be like with/without the upgrade.

My guess is that you could get a similar or better upgrade for much much less elsewhere.

BHP sells cars, torque drives cars.

I drove a 997 C4S a couple of weekends ago with my mate in the back (who also owns a 996TT) we both wondered where the performance was, so much so that it put me off buying it (that plus the styling not being different enough to the 997 C2)

I don't want to start a 996TT vs 997 thread, but the 997 C4S felt a lot slower than my 996TT. In the real world, perhaps there is little difference.

Check out Autocar's performance figures (not very scientific I know but consistant) you will see (in addition to a 997 C2 being slower to 100mph than a 996 C2) the Turbo performance figures mullering the 997 C2's, and a 997 C4S with a perfomance pack on will probably be about the same performance as a 997 C2 (the extra power being negated by the extra weight)
As said, if performance is key, get a 996 TT & modify it (500bhp / 500lbs torque easy) or get a 997TT next year which will probably have around 500bhp standard.

Or get a nice 993TT, modify it to 500bhp. Depreciation proof (relatively) monster performance and better looking than the 997.

Ok, i'll get my coat.

Have you got the torque figures?

Resh. If you have no trade in, have you considered getting an order in for a 997TT (with X50 power upgrade of course!) and in the meantime buying a used comfort spec GT3 Mk 2. Seems to be a fair few low mileage examples in the early £50k area.

the 997 TT is rumoured to be more than £110k base !!! ouch !! out of my budget.

we have our name down for the TUrbo too - but the price tag is very scarey.........

also do you not think that the new 997 face has put a few years on the 996 - albeit the 996 was the dogs whatsits

obviously the turbo will be a lot faster in a strait line, (how often do you get to use that performance anyway) but the throttle response of the n/a engine and the lighter weight imho makes the n/a more fun to drive on the bendy bits where 911s make most sense anyway. Also it's NICE to thrap the engine up to find the power at the top end and hear the noise, difficult to find the space to do that in a turbo without getting arrested!

Although a different comparison, remember that the 996 gt3 is faster round most tracks than the turbo...

As with so many threads here its starts of with a simple question and then ends up with a dozen other questions.
Sounds like the guy knows which car he whats but is'nt sure about the options and i'm sure if wanted a 966tt would have started the thread differently.
Mate,if you can afford the power kit buy it and the sports exhaust,if you are worrying about what its going to worth when your done with it then dont, regardless your buying a very nice car.
I would'nt buy it full stop but then you were'nt asking that!

why wouldnt you buy it ? something else perhaps ?

i will be only using it at weekends - whereas the C2S i used for work, which was impractical.

Seems like you dont know what you want which makes my previous post total bollo.ks
In that case i would'nt buy it because i'm not a fan of 4wd porsches and also i dont want to loose 30k in 2years of ownership.
You had a C2 and sold it to buy a c4 why?
The C2 is always going to be the more interesting of the two.You say your going to use it as weekend car,for me this is the last car i would buy for that use.
So in your position what would i buy?
997 gt3 not that far away great weekened car, will be a fantastic drive, plenty of power great image, good short term demand, modern and desirable etc.....
In the meantime by a cayman s now,pay the grand premium sell it when the GT3 comes loose pennys and enjoy the fun.

Pretty much my thinking although I think I'd have just stuck with the C2S originally. GT3s are pretty hardcore so you have to be sure its what you want. Buying a cayman in the mean time just seems pointless.

I just don't see the point in 4wd, especially for a weekend toy.

always wanted a Por - had deposit down for c4s couple of years ago, then dealer, sutton coldfield, called me last april to spec car, told me new c2s in october, so adv me to wait out so i did. then he called me when c4s was announced so i sold the c2s, to hold out for c4s - from what you are all saying i must be on CRACK to have sold the C2S -

Not true if the guy needs a car now.
The cayman fits the bill because if he wants a short term car that will sell and does'nt want to loose lots of cash then thats the only one to have.
If your into to antiques then go for a 993.Forget 996s too many around to get out of quickly

Not crack just think of a good reason why you would want a car that is'nt as much fun to drive as your C2 and costs more?
As a weekend drive i maintain that the 997GT3 is the best choice for this task

the reverse actually, both cars lovely but the 997 nose is less modern than the 996 due to old style lights

early base model cars looking plain now but 4S, TT and GT cars still look great

Whilst I prefer the 996 lights too, I think its dangerous to assume the market feels the same!

I'm becoming one of those muttering rotters saying how the previous model was better looking /tediously droning on.

I don't, in fact I am counting on them all feeling different as I carefully watch 996TT prices get more affordable
