The Whole Hog..... :gulp:
Discussion
Good news, the top end rebuild went really well at Autowerke.
Unfortunately, the increased compression etc has unearthed a slight bottom end rattle - I went along to have a listen and have decided to go the whole hog Its time to get the bottom end done too whilst all the components up top are still fresh.
I foresee a slightly alarming bill heading my way - but it seems like the right thing to do for the long term ownership of the car. I couldnt drive round in her knowing that the top end is great but the bottom is not quite as it should be. (Sounds like a couple of my ex's actually )

The old oil lines had practically welded themselves to the old turbos, and every single bolt holding turbo to manifold and turbo to cat was utterly knackered. Two turbos...
Plus, i think the 8 hour estimate was conservative, so i assumed it would take 10 to 12. In the end they spent almost 24 hours on it though and only charged me for 14, so i can't complain.

Don't worry, i just replaced the turbos/cats/exhausts on my car and the labour ended up being a bit more than anticipated and i also needed a few extar oil lines ( the old ones were trashed). 8 hours labour turned into 20...
The result's worth it though!
so exactly what difference have you experienced? How bad were your old turbos? What's the sound like of the Techart 100 cell exhaust system at low, med, high rpm? Roughly what did the whole package cost?

And what's it done to your insurance?
Nothing wrong with old turbos, but they'd done 70k miles so i had no idea how much longer they'd last (catastrophic failure would mean an engine rebuild... eeek!).
Got a fab deal from someone on here, for recon'd turbos (done 1000 miles), techart 100 cells and techart sports exhausts (with tips). I won't say who, but he'll be announcing his new engine spec in due course i'm sure.
Not sure what power increase (if any), feels the same up to about 4.5k, then seems to rev much more freely (hit the revlimiter 4 times on the way home!). Clearly breathing is improved at the top end, and i think the turbos are spooling up quicker.
I did it for the insurance (fresh turbos) and the noise. Sounds so much nicer than standard cats with RSR's or muffler bypasses (IMHO) - quite grumbly at bottom end, then growly through the revs...
This is what i look like now

Hi Dom
I guess this will come to us all at some stage so please keep posting as it's very interesting.
Also be quite interesting to hear of anyone else who's needed the bottom end doing as my understanding is that a 3.2s bottom end is very strong and that top end only is the norm.
Sorry - off topic.
VS - have you replaced with the standard K16s or gone the whole hog on K24s?
Re. catastrophic failure, I understood that for the most part the failure mode of a turbo was bearing wear and oil leakage. I presume that you're referring to impeller disintegration and metal bits and bobs shagging the engine on the way through the cylinders. Out of curiosity, have you actually ever heard of this happening to a porker?

Yep, the bottom end is indeed meant to be very strong. Matt @ Autowerke advised that he sees situations such as this (requiring the whole lot once top done) on a ratio of approx 1 in 20. He has also mooted (sp?) the idea of no longer accepting a top end rebuild only - (As with my case its a bit of a shock to someone who has a top end budget, only to be faced with a full rebuild).
I think most of us would agree that the work is worthwhile for the longevity of the car, but its nice to have some time to get used to the idea of spending the equivalent of a new suzuki/daewoo/citreon etc on your engine maintenence
