Cassis definately not pink. Had a 964 round on Saturday that was rasberry metallic (or the German equivalent. Now that WAS pink !!

Re: all the other stuff : I can`t speak for other dealers although obviously I have my views. If a car is scruffy we`ll tell you before you arrive. I still maintain our system works very well. In spite of what you might think different people do want different things and a lot of it has to do with the money they have available. We would consider showing a car that had poor paintwork (got one going on the site this week), but our asking price will reflect that and you`ll be well aware of what you`re coming to see.

Still puzzled as to why we`d be unsure about picking you up from the station as we do it most days and the tube station is only 2 minutes away. Hey Ho.

A little tip when buying a car, or in fact anything. Don`t see the sellers as the enemy. Be nice. If they are supposed experts in their field listen to what they`ve got to say. Unless it`s on a premium rate number it`s free advice! Keep things light hearted, win the people over and try to befriend them. We give more money off cars when we like someone. If someone`s an arsehole we tend not to bother with them, it may not be right but it`s human nature. As a salesman I`m good, sometimes I sell things in a shop to people when I hear the salesman struggling just for fun. But you know the best thing about it, I get the best deals and advice when I go shoping because I make sure the sales guy likes me. It`s you the buyer who controls the pace, you set the mood and you reap what you sow. The table that gets the best service in a restaurant is the happy table and the table who knows the waiter`s name. Just don`t get too happy and start hugging the dude, especially if he`s actually a dudette or they may have you thrown out !

As ever keep smiling - Henry

Henry - some great advice in you latest. Maybe I should have come out to 911virgin afterall.

I'm not sure why your man was vague about picking me up from the station either. In fact, I seem to recall that whoever I was speaking to was going off somewhere and said something like - 'I won't be here but if you phone when you arrive we should be able to sort something out.' Trouble was I didn't fancy treking 1 hour from my office and finding nobody home.

Or maybe your man had already got me down as one of the 'arseholes' which you say you don't bother with. Actually the arshole theory is one point in your advice I would take issue with. Give the customer good advice sure, but let them have what they want to pay for at the end of the day. Half my customers are arsholes, but I can't see any reason not to take their money. I guess you consider being able to avoid them as one of the benefits of running your own business, but personally I prefer taking their cash.

Ahh... You called up & said could you come over and be picked up from the station. The chap said he wouldn`t be there himself, ie we already have commitments for that afternoon, or which ever day you wanted to come and we were not at full staff that afternoon. You can`t hold that against a company, in the same way you can`t criticise your favourite restaurant if you call up to book a table only to be told they are fully booked.

The other thing that pissed me off was the attitude the dealers had to mileage. They seem to flip the arguement around to suit the stock they have. When I said I was looking for a relatively low mileage car with few owners most of them said that mileage isn't important, it's all about condition and history. But when they got their hands on a low mileage car they all whacked a massive premium on it and said it was a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity.

We know there are some people out there who will move mountains, (and dig deeply into their pockets) to buy an ultra low mile car, ususally only off a dealer though. They then either destroy the premium by using the car or find when they come to sell it privately it has to sell on price and they lose money struggling to to get back the breath-taking premium they paid at purchase.

We, (the dealers) are doing the decent thing and trying to avoid your making that mistake. We know that a car`s condition varies not according to the number on the speedo, and certainly not according to the number of registered former keepers, but the car it`s self. So, (but for Christ`s sake keep this to yourself), you might not actually be getting anything for your money. Save your pennies. It`s not that we are trying to keep "the good stuff" from you & palm you off with old tat, we`re trying to do the decent thing. Interesting that most of the dealers were singing from the same sheet on this one.

You know Henry, can I just applaud you for being on here and joining in with this (and other) thread(s)?

Being a dealer you open yourself up for a ribbing just by posting just a few words (!), but then provide constructive responses which explain your point of view.

Personally I think its a testament to your belief that your operation is a fair and honest one... I'm actually quite impressed.

Thank you for providing an interesting point of view from the other side of the fence - and not going quiet as soon as someone writes something that's not easily digestable. It makes for a much more balanced and interesting forum!

I applaud Henry for selling cars FULL STOP. Judging by the lengths I have to go to for a £10 set of indicators I wonder how anyone ever sells cars at all!
I for one will never put myself in a position where I have to sell my car to the public (especially with 9 p/owners and indi service history - who would want it?).

When I was younger I had a heavily modified mini and when it came to parting with it, I carefully polished it up and then cut it into 6 pieces with a 9" angle grinder. People thought I was mad but it saved an awful lot of messing about!

No, when it comes to parting with the TT, Henry will get first refusual and I will post all the relevant details here for everyone to chew over (along with all the responses such as "i'd have given you that for it!)

Oh thats ok - you see I am "THE" Pikey, and not "a" Pikey. Big difference

Actually dear chap, you have the "hate" in the wrong position. Convention has it after the word "f**king". You see what you wrote implies that you only hate Pikeys that are fornicating, whereas actually you really mean you hate all of them. Tricky business this.

I wouldn't go that far - not all buyers are timewasters. The fellow that I bought off had one person come to see his car, paid with verified bankers draft and cash on the spot, drove off into the sunset, easy-peasy. However it's true that selling to myself will rather defeat the object of selling...

Dunno about that, my memory may be betraying me - will have to check with the film tonight which way round they said it! You have to take into account the flexibility of the word f**king - in this context it is nowt to do with fornication, and everything to do with being as derogatory as possible about them!

Anyway, if I recall correctly from previous threads, like myself you are viking of proud norseman stock. What the hell are you doing calling yourself "The Pikey"? You'll bring us Danes into disrepute, they'll think that we come from a nation of caravanners for god's sake!

Either way, you're now Henry's best mate so he can probably sort you out with a 911 equipped with tow hook.

I agree with pikey with his comments regarding henry.
I'm no fan of car dealers at all, most of the porsche specialists are people selling over priced cars, and not even giving the after sales service to match.
I like henrys way of doing things, and like he's already said if it was all about money he would be selling newer/less hassel stock.
For me independents should concentrate on older cars and not try and be over priced opcs,we have plenty of them already!
Also i like the way he does'nt run at the first difficult post, and has the balls to be on here in the first place as already stated.
No one gets it right all the time, and maybe his cars are'nt the best around, but from what i have heard and read he is'nt of full of shit and that counts more in my book.
Its not all good news though,i'm afraid you are'nt going to win any beauty contests, maybe thats why you have to keep smiling.
Of course though, beauty comes from within!

As you well know it`s all about personality and making them laugh, (with you not at you!).

The fact that I`m able to pleasure a lady and play her like a fine musical instrument helps too.

Thanks Clubsport, yes, i have read all the mag write ups on that car, sounds a good one but I have decided that it is a 3.2 Carrera Coupe in RHD that I need.

Good choice, my first Porsche was a 30k mile 1989 3.2,,I later had an 1989 Clubsport version...the 3.2 is one of my favourite Porsches...I personally think it is a much better proposition than a 964 (except for a 964RS )
One small dowside is if driven hard the brakes are not up to modern standards, you can get round this with boxster calipers.
A fine choice,,,I will keep my eyes open

ta

A mate has just phoned me to say that one of our local indies has an 89 coming in, full history, A1, known car with 52k on the clock - ideal! ...

If only I had been able to get hold of the owner, as the dealer price is about £3 or £4k over my max £15k budget

But, it goes to show that they are out there, it's just finding the buggers
