Seen it too bins, 5th gear mentioned Optimax was better, and funny enough, they used a Golf Gti as well! I don't think their test was as extensive as EVO's anyway. Still pondering on which to use, since Ultimate is definitely most expensive but wonder if it does give more mpg??? EVO also mentioned that results depends from car to car.One might like optimax more etc... Guess it'll always be tricky this one guys.

This is an interesting topic, purely from allways filling full tanks of the various fuels and never intentionally comparing I started to notice that my 944 always felt suprisingly quick when I had filled up with BP Ultimate and when using Optimax I felt no disernable different from 95 ron fuel. However I strongly believe in this theory of fuel freshness because particular tanks of fuel have in the past made a huge difference to my cars performance. I usually notice the bad more often than the good! Perhaps the older model 944 (which was set up to run on 100 octane)is just a fussy car with fuel and exagerates these differences because I don't see other cars getting such an obvious change in performance.

As for which I buy now Tesco's 99ron seems to give the most reliable results for me no matter what car I'm in...and it sertainly helps that the price is right! I paid 88.9p per litre for a tank the other day:-)

Funny that we all accept petrol in the high 80p's per litre as cheap-I remember it seemed not long ago that over 80 was considered expensive.

Having read the Evo article I'm impressed with the thorough test and somewhat surprised at the result.

There was mention of the potential negative effects of the ethanol content on rubber in the fuel system although nothing specific on what content would cause a problem.

There was also the interesting point of "bad" tanks so although BP ultimate scored highest in torque it also came up with a bad batch on one fill-up.

Either tesco or BP seems the best with a tank of Optimax every few tanks to help with cleaning.

I second that on the 944 turbo being sensitive to fuels. The first time I tried BP Ultimate 100 the diference was very very noticeable, almost seemed like a different car without the tipical lag up to 3500 rpm.

Called in at a local Tesco today as I was running low, the highest I could find was 95, went to another garage near & could still only find 97

playing around with different maps in my s4 and thraping my impreza close to death on the track i've concluded that tesco 99 and optimax are great and esso/texaco are frankly crap, on aggro maps esso and texaco detonate so early the ecu just shuts the boost off completely. i wouldnt let my dog drink it. or something
