According to this weeks autocar the caymans bubble has burst!
Not much of a bubble in the first place imho.
Independents claim that there are more sellers than buyers.
So what do phers think?
Has porsche finally dropped a clanger?
My view is that i think the public at large is'nt fooled by this over priced boxster with a roof and it is'nt going to be the big money spinner they thought it would be.

I think the cayman is a car the public have been crying out for, i think it looks good and sounds good and i suspect (though i haven't driven it yet) it feels good too. But...

If a TT is £25k, it's not unreasonable for a similar spec Boxster to be £35k, but if a 350Z is £30k and a similar spec Cayman S is £50k it's a little more difficult to swallow.

IMHO they have overpriced it spectacularly.

A friend called me about selling his Mrs spare Boxta S...top spec all the history and only 4k miles....I then called another friend who was due to collect his lesser specced same colour Cayman suggesting the Boxster may make sense at 24 grand less than he was about to spend......He went ahead with the Cayman and is loving it. Somehow I see that spread narrowing over the next few months..

I think you're right. When I was shopping for the 996, someone suggested buying a new Boxster, which I wouldn't do because I wouldn't want a convertible (or a hairdresser's car ). If a Cayman had been available for similar money, it would have been very tempting. But at 45-50k it's easier to buy a 996.

I have to agree thats its really all down to price,i remember when early talk was of a car around 29k.
What stopped porsche doing a nice 2.7 clubsport version at that money, with the option to speck the car up to the moon if one so wish it?
That really would have been a car that would have sold out 3 years in advance imo.
Its such a shame some greedy tt at porsche has turned this car into what it is,an overpriced joke!

A mate at work had been talking about getting a Cayman for about 6 months.

He's not any more.

The combination of cockster/gayman jibes and more importantly, the realisation that with a decent spec level it's a £50k car, has made him start looking at 997s.

A bit more money for a lot more car (IMO).

Maybe this is what Porsche wanted people to do all along?

How about this - a boxster S is a 3.2, so make a coupe mechanically the same (engine, box, brakes, etc.), then give it electric windows, central locking, an alarm, air con, and some bucket seats (in leather).

You can choose the exterior colour, interior colour, and delete the air con if you wish. No other options.

Now badge it as a Boxster CS (Coupe Sport) and sell it for £33k.

I said that long ago!! www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=222932

Personally I don't think it's a clanger at all. Its clearly a fantastic car, but the big question on everyone's minds concerns the price. It will however be "interesting" to see how it pans out.

Calling it an "overpriced Boxster with a roof" does imply you've already made your mind up though. You could also have said its a "vastly improved Boxster", which would be the opposite.

I think it fits perfectly in the middle between Cayman and the 997... which is what its intended to do, and what all the reviewers think. Why is that a bad thing?

Boxster! You're in a Boxster man!Its a good car, so why disguise the name? Its almost like you're ashamed of it. One has a 911, they say they have "a 911". One has a Boxster, they say they have a "Porsche" or a "987". Hell, I have an S2000 - I don't know what to say

I think the price has to fit in between the other prices. Must say I am miffed at how much are extras on a Porsche, when they're included in an S2K, but that's merely that company's marketing policy.

As for value for money and what's best - some will say they have £50k to spend on a car and look to see what they can get second hand. Others will say they have £50k to spend on a car and look to see what they can get new.

You want a great value sports car? Get an S2000 - very difficult to beat. Boxster's better though!

Agree with Pikey re money. I personally think the Cayman is a great looking car. I have owned Boxster and Boxster S and have had enough of open to motoring now so looking for a coupe. I can afford a 997 but the shape does nothing for me whereas I love the look of the Cayman. However.....I think it is overpriced (the spec I want would be £50K) and will wait for a nicely depreciated but fairly new one next year if I go down that route.

Greedy tt... or marketing genuis?

Remember this is the car company that turned itself around from going under to being the most profitable car company in existance. That was mostly down to the Boxster giving them high volume sales.

Could be that for quite a while they have seen a gap between the Boxster and 911 that could be plugged and they've set out to do just that.

FFS, I bought a sofa last month - that was the most overpriced thing ever! (V. nice though) Things are priced for what they'll sell for, not what they're worth.

It won't be a greedy tw*t, it'll be a very clever marketing machine.

Do I think its a good car........yes
Do I think the price is right....no to expensive
will it sell yes, because Porsche are trying to reach the Audi TT, Z3, Z4 owners, who are not quite ready for a 911, but would not be put off by the price because they would see it as an upgrade from their previous car.

Having a new model launch at this time of year is always risky, but I guess Porsche thinks that such is the demand for the marque that they can sell large volumes in any season.

The combination of cockster/gayman jibes ...

Hang on... your mate has decided to NOT spend a considerable amount of money on a car because 1) a jolly TV presenter continued his Porsche/Cocks joke and 2) a 10 year old in a playground noticed if you changed the C to a G then it would sound like something you could giggle at ????

So he didn't see it, test drive it, read the reviews, join the forums, and find everything he could about it?

Well, thats it then.

Porsche are ruined.

This car will clearly be a complete and utter failure, and the R&D costs will never be recouped, the forecasted sales will never be achieved, and the company will be brought down ...<clarkson pause>... all on a name.

Ruined, ruined, ruined....

Personally, if I were to spend £50k on a car, I'd act like a grown up, do thorough research and make up my own mind.

It is! I love the S2000 options, so easy to choose from: a) GT, b) not GT.

For the unitiated, a GT is the same car with an additional hardtop. Everything else is the same. The "everthing else" is Xeons, air con, power hood, PAS, Electric, full leather, sports seats, sports steering wheel, good stereo, alloys, big brakes, good stereo. That lot sells for £28k. I wonder what the price would be removing a lot of that?

Maybe those extra's only cost HONDA about another £1,000, but they choose to plug them in to push the car as it doesn't have the Porsche pedigree? So does that mean that a fully loaded Cayman *should* be nearer 44k not 50k, but they reckon they can push it? Probably... but then they've been doing that with the 911 for years.

(Ooh, hang on, I lied. Metallic paint and CD autochanger are an options.)
