What is it with Boxster owners?
Discussion
IMHO, no offence intented to the poster, but this really seems a pointless thread and for what its worth i think if anyone was trying to hide behind numbers to mask their boxster shame, why would they bother to buy it in the first place?
Boxsters may be everywhere now,but it still is the best roadster in its class on the roads today and anyone who says otherwise has
A.Never driven one or
B.Is clueless.

what Rob said and what a load of old tosh this thread is
why? we are not talking with office colleagues; we are talking on a car/Porsche forum so everyone knows what a 986 / 987 / 993 etc is

Go on then ask a straw people in your office (or wherever you are) the following questions;
1. What is a 993 C2?
2. What is a 986?
3. What is a 996 TT?
Bet you get a lot of blank faces for most people (unless you're on a tradng floor)

I don't think it's a 'pointless' thread, I also have begun noticing owners referring to their Boxsters as 987s and wondered (for a moment) why, but it makes sense to me now that I've given it some thought. Relating it to the 911 example, if I was speaking generically or to someone that I didn't know I would refer to it as a 'nine eleven' since most people know what that is and it's not important to emphasise which one, but if I was speaking to another petrolhead I would always refer to it by it's factory name and type, because that's the sort of thing we all are interested in knowing. Same as with my current M3 CSL, most enthusiasts will refer to M3s as either being E30 M3, or E36 M3 or E46 M3, there's nothing egotistical about that it just provides clarity and interest to whatever your talking about.
Someone describing their car as a 987 Boxster just helps me understand that it's the much improved Boxster, but having said that I would find it a bit odd if a Cayman owner described their car as anything other than a Cayman.

Thats very true and if the thread had started out just to ask that question, then indeed interesting topic, but i think the poster also had other ideas.
That I will agree with you on. The rest of us are having quite an interesting discussion on Porsche naming conventions and how we use them.

couldn't agree more sir but this strikes me as obvious - hence pointless thread
(topic just smacks of Boxster not deemed worthy enough to be referred to by model no. like a 911 is)

No I didn't. There was no hidden agenda in the question. Are you paranoid or something? A simple question has got blown out of proportion.

Fulham....starting your question with "Now this isn't a dig at hand-bag swinging hair-dressers" would seem to indicate otherwise. Provocative language, in my experiemce, is only normally used by people looking for an argument. Hence there would appear to be a hidden agenda. IMHO of course!

Oh really! It was a joke you tool. I was asking a question. Won't bother in future.
Ted : please feel free to put a close this lunacy
When I am commuting in on my motorcycle 911 owners give me room to get past (to both parties advantage), at best Boxster owners don't.
Thank you 911 owners, appreciated.
Boxster owners, why not?
From non-Porsche owning but 911 GT3RS 'appreciater', whatever code number it is. Whoever has one is a very lucky bunny and I hope you appreciate it.

Now this isn't a dig at hand-bag swinging hair-dressers before you lot get on your high horses ... but why is it that MANY Boxster owners always refer to them in threads as 986 / 987 etc?
.
I'm sorry but this is unacceptable, and abusive. everyone who knows anything about porsche knows that the 944/968 cab is the original, proper hairdressers car and to suggest otherwise is highly offensive. i didnt pay good money for two extra seats to put my handbag on just for you to deny my car's heritage

Putting the personal insults to one side for a moment I think there is a very clear reason for using 986/7 notations so everyone knows which car is being referred to as is the case with the 964/993/996/997 911`s.
There is one model number who`s use does bug me though. The 951, or to you and me the 944 Turbo. There are no other 944 Turbos, they only made 1 shape 944 and it came in either 944, 944S, 944S2 or 944 Turbo guise. The next car in the line was called a 968. Possibly the question should have been directed to the 944 brigade not the Boxster boys & girls.
