Obviously only relevant to a couple of people given the number of competition licence holders & current / former rally champions on the forum, (see heel & toe thread).

Thought I`d post it as an aide memoire to self and any other mortals still about.

As the road conditions deteriorate with the onslaught of Winter, (and a good tip for the wet as well), try using one gear higher than you might normally choose in the dry to pull away, particularly on roundabouts & motorway slip roads.

The vast majority of spins are likely to occur when you`re accelerating in a lower gear and turning a bit of a corner. The back end will break away and you`ll pop the old girl into the armco. This is most common when in 2nd & 3rd gears. Try going round that 2nd gear roundabout in 3rd rather than 2nd, or 4th rather than 3rd. Makes it harder for the rear wheels to lose grip.

Just a thought.

Keep smiling Henry

Also don't gun it away from petrol stations, regardless of how many attractive girls are standing at the pumps. There's always diesel on the road around filling stations. I've had a monster fishtail accelerating downhill from a filling station and had to use the whole road to get it back straight again... luckily there was nobody coming the other way!

Yeah, Gordon, stay away from 4k rpm in 5th gear on the motorway. That's when mine tried to kill me 2 weeks ago as it hit half boost...

On the road hopefully another trouble free year.

On the track hopefully another successful and fun year.

My fear was that by the sound of people on the heel & toe thread I`m going to be left behind struggling to keep up, (so what`s new !!). I`m afraid that because I`ve never once had to H&T on the road I`m not a good enough driver to carry on my racing career in the midst of such greatness.

I might also add that I`m a tad nervous of venturing out onto the highway with all these racing drivers trying to squeeze the last half a second out of the A264.

Keep smiling & don`t forget to breathe - Henry

I'm looking to do British GT's or Britcar in a Cup car but my budget isn't that big. I know that i'll be on the pace but it depends on the deal that I can do.

Need a second driver for 2006 Henry?

Hopefully driving with Pete again this season, we seem to look after the car well and are there or there abouts with the pace. He also makes me look ravishing in comparison on the podium !!

V good point. Which reminds me. To the guy in the Boxster on Sunday evening coming past Tower Bridge and then along Lower / Upper Thames street. It really isn't clever to over-take and jostle for position the way you did. You wound your window down to say something. Didn't you hear what I said? In case you're reading this I'll repeat it "F**k off you w***ker and stop racing on the roads". You also had a poncy reg plate that I can't remember but must have been along the lines of ID10T

LOL

Henry you are so right!

Road driving at speed is all about progressing safely. I don't advocate driving to the speed limit but one should always use appropriate speed and safe driving techniques. It's like bikers who use every opportunity to get their knee down!

If you want to be a good road driver/rider then follow the Police Roadcraft manuals.
