That was the one.

I was chatting to the owner at a previous track day, it was producing about 300 bhp.

Can I ask the GT2 owners whether these cars can be enjoyed on British roads or is it a track tool?

Thanks
I had one of these for a year - an 01 very early car. Fantastic. It might not fill you with the confidence of a normal 996, but it's amazingly usable. In fact, because of it's amazing grunt you find yourself overtaking cars where you would have previously thought it would be impossible. Also you can really feel the car being pushed into the road at high speed - much more stable in high speed cornering than a normal 911 - which can tend to feel a bit floaty at higher speeds. They reckon the latest model (04 my) has a much more forgiving chassis - which is probably down to anti-roll bars and bushes etc - they did a test in EVO issue no 72 - and upped their rating to 5 stars...... You should buy one if you can - it's a must 'have owned'....

In what type of comparison? Both of the others will help you stay on the road with stability+traction control. The GT2 will just bin you if you drive it beyond your ability. Frankly an excellent driver in a BMW 320 will leave behind a crap one in a sports car on the road or track.

So true Dan.
I have a friend who used to be a Hot Rod driver who could leave me for dead in my 997S if he was driving a Ford Focus. When I first bought my M3 I drove it up to his house and he took it out for a "spin".
I sat in the passenger seat in fear of my life. This bloke brakes so late he might as well not bother! After about 20 minutes of taking corners at light speed we eventually arrived back on his driveway and he casually said "Yeah, it's not bad". At this point my legs were completely gone, I had no blood in my body, if I'd tried to get out of the car I would have fell straight on my face on the gravel in front of his wife and kids so I'm going "Oh, could you explain how the Sat Nav works?". By the time he'd finished I could just about stand.
Quiet country lanes I should point out, no other traffic.

He's asked me a couple of times to bring up the Porsche but I just can't face it.

Not so sure your mate has the best technique for driving on the road to be fair...who would expect someone coming toward them driving at 12/10ths???

Perhaps experience of a few airfield/trackdays may help you regain composure after a high speed jaunt?

Where does the GT2 excel though? Is it as fast around a track as a sorted GT3? Is it as fast A-B on British roads/weather as a 996tt? If not(and I don't know the answer) then what defines it except rarity?

The GT2 excels in being raw in comparison with the others..... A GT3 would probably be quicker round a track - unless you get the suspension sorted that is. To my mind a GT3 on the road isn't that exciting because they have to be driven beyond sensible road limits to get what they're all about - the GT2 stand alone in that it is just soooo fast and in real conditions a quick blast for overtaking and up to highly illegal speeds is relatively speaking fairly safe - A Turbo on the other hand is a very fast a to b car but with very little soul - 4wd psm etc seem to rob it of the feel that you get in a GT2. Compared to the likes of the 430 and Gallardo - performance wise, very little in it - unless you get the DMS or equiv upgrade, but look at the price diference - a good GT2 is going to set you back 60k - the others almost double. The bottom line is, don't get it for being a fast and easy to live with road car - get it for the adrenalin hit you'll get everytime you take it for a blast.

Yeah I know cs, but believe me this bloke has driving skill in spades. It's not ideal but he handles 70 better than most handle 20. I'm not advocating bad driving by any means.
