If Porsche own such a big steak in VW, why not sit back and let the peoples car makers knock out the farm vehicles, mini buses and the people carriers while Porsche concerntrate on trying to maintain some sense of brand respect in the SPORTS CAR market. If they want to make a respectable luxo barge with kiddie space do something with that engine that rivals the M5.

I thought that was what the Panamerica was supposed to do. No idea however whether it will get a KN V8 or the CGT V10 however I am sure it will be very nice and at least £30K more then the M5 (but with less space). Should make a big dent in the AM/Bentley/Merc's market share of the mega 4 door barge market.

That's exactly what happens (apart from the steak bit - thomas Bscher ate that on his last visit to Wolfsburg). VW does all the R+D on all sorts of stuff, such as luxury 4x4s, big GTs, and supercars; they release the VW versions into the market (or exhibit them at car shows) and everyone goes "Peeee-eeww" and runs away holding their nose. Then Bentley, Audi, Lamborghini and Porsche arrive, slap different badges on 'em and they sell like hot cakes. Hurray.

If you can figure out how to work the bloody thing, that iDrive is sh*t! I think it's essential with any performance car that you should be able to control it instinctively. Complex electronics and nearly unfathomable controls do not equate the all in-one-supercar principle to me!

Are you related to the tall fat curly haired one per chance? Either that or you haven't driven one. I-Drive is a piece of pi33 if you have ever used a mouse, and I think it takes about 10 seconds to setup the M button and push it! For everything else theres voice control! Next you'll be telling us you can't switch off the sat nav, Jeremy!

I'm 1) not related to the tall fat curly haired one (God forbid, unless he's has people of West Indian descent in his blood...) and 2) I HAVE driven one (albeit in the US) as well as the 745Li and all l can say is though I'm fairly savvy with a mouse/track-pad/stylus etc. I still find the system cumbersome; having to scroll through menus just to change the bass and treble settings of the stereo (for example) is extremely annoying when I'm driving. The point is that it's all well and good to program this stuff before you start on a journey but l find it a little too distracting when l'm on the move. Believe me, Californian freeways are no joke and 10 seconds to NOT be paying full attention to the road is far too long, I know l'm not the only one who thinks this either... Regarding the voice control, I've had a number of problems (particularly with the 745) getting the mic sensitivity right and while it impresses first time passengers to hear the car ask "Pardon?" that novelty soon wears off when all l want to do is play some Vivaldi!

An even more powerful monstrosity, which no doubt will be seen rushing up behind lesser vehicles who dare to use the outside lane, at an even higher rate of knots.

OUT OF MY WAY ! OUT OF MY WAY !

the problem with Porsche's success with the Cayenne is that in many years from now, they will have an MPV, a range of saloon cars, a hatch back and a van, and will be no more respected than Mercedes or BMW... who also started life as sports car manufacturers but then had the bean counters (accountants) and latte drinkers (marketing bods) stick their dirty fingers in the business model pie. Sure we'll have the mega powerful cars, but also 1.8 litre versions driven around by sales reps.

Let's not forget that the much-maligned 'reps' are keeping the rest in employment though.

Wow, that big 'steak' is going to whiff after a while though, isn't it ?

This kind of thing is exactly why Porsche Carrera GT values drop like a stone whilst Ferrari Enzo values just go up and up. People lose respect for the brand when the badge is also found on a people carrier on stilts. Fair play for sticking to their guns and not using a diesel but if you have those sort of values then why make the thing in the first place?

Wouldn't like to be hit by one of those things at 160, my TVR would look like a squashed drinks can in the road.

i loathe the things but i recon porsche must make about £20k on each one. at the very least. which can only be a good thing. more r&d money for sensible cars like gt2's, gt3's, cgt's and do us a favour and develop another real rs!
