RE: Porsche GT3 RS revealed
Discussion
The management at Porsche need a good kick up the backside.
I am very dissapointed with the offering, actually looks like a step backwards.
They should have left steel brakes and spent the reserve on losing 100 kilos or so.
I think the majority feel the same way too.
I'm just releaved that I didn't put a deposit down.

Glad to see Porsche are continuing their policy of raping the RS heritage to extract maximum dosh out of punters. Not even a hint of subtlety this time about it. Sorry but this is even more of an accountants motor than the last one and yer mugs if any of you stump up for one.
"Look, look Mr Punter, it is even in classic '73 2.7RS Orange, therefore it *must* be a genuine modern RS, see?"
Come on, someone else must be seeing this argument by now? They *saved* 20kgs? What did they do...chuck out the PCM and the handset?
This is the sort of outrage nonsense I was referring to.

Alas it isnt nonsense. Porsche started this with the 996 GT3 and RS, but almost everybody bought it then, this time around they have been even more blatent about what they are doing and now it is being remarked upon. Oh Porsche will still flog as many GT3s and RS' as they can make, but as direct bloodline to a proper S or RS? Make no mistake, they are taking the punter for a ride. These are being sold purely to make maximum profit out of the punter, *not* for any other reason. If it was genuinely serious about making a "proper" RS, it would be at least another 50-100KG lighter, it would be worth £15k over the lower spec model, but it would cost Porsche about ane extra £13k in engineering terms to produce the car. This stuff has cost Porsche about £5k extra (and Im being generous) whilst still asking the £15k extra.
There is a reason Porshe is the most profitable car company in the world and I dont begrudge them that. I am utterly in thrall to them every time they release a new version of the Turbo. I dont, however, subscribe for one minute to any notion of romance or pretence that the current cooking models of the 911 have an iota of real RS DNA in them. I dont much blame Porsche for that, they dont need to do it. They dont need to flog their own finances into the ground to produce their ultimate real world 911 motor (we wont count the GT1 here) to get folk to buy it. They know they can produce the luke warm road car effort and it will be lapped up, whilst they spend the real money on the race car where the extra effort is *needed* to be expended to produce the product. The key word there is *need*. If the hardcore punters want that, they will go to Manthey or Ruf. The rest will happily buy a GT3 or "RS" and buy into the '73 myth.
Did Porsche both with the "Look At Me With My '73 Decals, I *Must* Be Their Bloodline" approach with the 964 or 993? Did they hell, they just produced the best they could and consequently the cars are legendary, revered, owners would rather part with their balls than their RS and residuals are rock hard. Such an attitude by Porsche basically drove it damn nr bankrupt and they needed to find another way of doing stuff and they have.
Now the Turbo...*that* is Porsche at their best.

Going to be the same sort of money as a Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale 2nd hand, yet despite the strad being a much bigger car, it's 100kg lighter. Time Porsche moved to aluminium with a few carbon fibre panels at the rear.
Well if going 2nd hand, why not get the 996 GT3 RS which is similar pace to the CS and save loads.
Tsk, listen to all these armchair opinions when nobody here has even driven the car.
Bit early to say that Porsche has diluted the 'bloodline' no?
And heaven forbid they're making a car they think they can sell trading off the RS 'brand' values.
Perhaps some people should spend more time driving these great cars.

Oh dear!
I can understand where you guys are coming from on the weight/price thing, but it isn't just about how much a car weighs. Just because RS's of old were lighter doesn't make them better!
Look at how successfull the GT3 has been in international motor sport, it is nothing less than an icon, a real racer. So the RS may be expensive, but you can bet your bottom dollar it will be simply fabulous on track! Get over the old stuff this is a modern racer to the core!

Which is why its a shame it doesn't do more. The GT3 isn't winning in racing now. The 430s are...

as someone who'll never own one i love the new GT3RS. i want to see one in signal green now..!
i'd also like to draw your attention to the black lower sills after my comment the other day in general gassing about the front splitter on a std GT3 looking a bit imbalanced... they listen to the man on the street (...!).

i have to say i find this thread quite amusing - people moaning about the extra cost over a GT3. like c£80k is a bargain..! just let those that want to spend the extra money enjoy it i say!
andrewd said:Ah. I see your point. You don't think we should voice an opinion (unsubstantiated judgement as you call it) until we've driven the car. If we stuck to that formula the previous four pages of comment wouldn't have happened - including what you obviously see as your own valuable contribution - then where would you be. Your stance is flawed in any event. I bet you've got views on, say, F1 but have you driven the cars or met all the people involved? Do you have a view on Iraq and if so have you been there? Lighten up matey - we're just enjoying ourselves.
Except I wasn't offering some unsubstantiated judgement sammy, unless you're saying you've driven the car and actually have something useful to say about it? in which case, i'm genuinely interested
