I love the idea of the Cayenne Turbo but am a little worried about running costs etc. Can anyone tell me if it is worth the extra to go for the Turbo? (so I guess pro's Vs Cons type thing??)

I would go for it. The progress, both technically and environmentaly, that the Cayanne possesses makes it the best car the world has seen. Personally, I feel that the Porsche designers and engineers who worked on the Cayanne were right not to talk to anyone but the American Marketing department of Porsche.

These Herr Doktors really deserve a pat on the back for creating a 2.5 tonne machine that can get to 60 in 6 seconds and still do more than 9mpg and all for under £70k.

If you are buying one, make sure its black and has tellies in the back for your children as they will find it hard to see out of the dark tinted windows.

I believe that the Cayenne has been usurped amongst the aspirant demographic so despised by something even blacker, squarer, this time and with about 25% of the grossoinker's dynamic.

The Range Rover Sport.

I am confident that my sproglette's seat of learning rivals any grasping pole of social ambition in the home counties for a rolling Rangie ad.

You need a Hummer to look like you're actually in a 4x4!

Ah yes the RRS

Going down a lane the aforementioned suddenly swerves into my path: cue much braking, hedge scraping and muddyness for the '93 E class barge.

Reason ? to avoid a puddle (well maybe an inch of water)

Popped up to Lincoln on Sunday night in the pouring rain. Average speed over 60mph on the trip and that included stopping in a lay-by to go on the radio & roadworks by Newark / M25 accident tailback! Average fuel consumption for the journey 20 mpg.

More importantly able to make steady progress past other cars in terrible conditions whilst remaining comfortable & safe. The A1 isn`t a flat straight American road and has high speed corners, roundabouts, surface degredation due to HGV traffic.

Both the 4.5 & Turbo are excellent versatile cars. The Turbo gives you quite a few optional extras (on lesser models) for free and not just a more powerfull engine.

That's another advantage of being slightly higher up, road spray doesn't seem to affect you as much as in a lower car.

In fact I can think of no meaningful advantages of being any lower than a modern SUV - I only use my other cars daily because they are easier to park (which an SUV is easier to park than a 7-series/S-Class anyway).

Ah yes those favourite vehicles of, as Mr Khan [or is it KAHN-cos I's not asian honest] of that famous design house in Bradford says-for people who are used to the "finer things in life".. like a good barrister to get them off their latest carousel fraud, drug charges, or in the case of those ("whose plastic knockers must be obeyed" WAG's speeding charges.

The arguments
1. I want to protect my kids but ruin the planet for them in the process.
2. I'm safe and you're not when I hit you.
3. High up makes me feel safer. Stop being a tw4t Toyota verso is high up also.......what a stoopid argument that is.
4. Its engineered to drive like a car....Then buy one and stop taking up so much road space.

I have no time for this government, they are going to royally screw the urban tanks and the owners deserve every last bit of it.

Feel better now.

No serious SUV owner buys into the first three arguments - those are just the soundbites rehashed by the media time and time again.

As far as No 4 is concerned - it IS a car, just a different shaped car. And what a daft and naive comment to make about the roadspace since most SUVs take up 'less' roadspace than their equivalent saloon. Increasingly they only weigh a few hundred kilos more than these equivalent saloons. Have you seen how much the new Lexus LS460 weighs or the Mercedes S-class LWB (i.e. they're 2000kg+). Slap on a few options and the weight is comparable with the sportier of the SUV collective. 'Tank' is just another misguided soundbite. Yes they are heavy, but you're kidding yourself if you describe an S-Class, A8, 7-series as 'light'...

Actually not too sure just how much of a problems cars are to the enviroment. I have a horrible feeling that because vehicles are an easy financial target, (£80 - 200 for parking in the wrong place against an £80 fine in the courts for theft, actual bodily harm etc), politicians & the like are jumping on a bit of a bandwagon. If we all drove 2.0 litre saloons I don`t think there would be much difference.

In vehicle to vehicle collisions equality is impossible to create. Someone in a 10 year old car is more vulnerable than someone in a brand new one & so on. I am happy with my driving ability and road craft to the extent I am more concerned with others hitting me or unavoidable contact with inanimate objects.

Actually my journey to Lincoln on Sunday night was a perfect example of when it is safer. I was above some of the spray and could see the enviroment around me far better than a low car. I`ve driven a 718 RSK replica which is the other extreme & hadn`t got a clue what was going on around me.

A lorry takes up lots of road space, the difference between say an Audi S4 and a Cayenne is negligable. The reality is a Smart Car, and Audi & a Cayenne all take up 1 parking space and the same "space" on the road.

You will be next my friend. Once the SUV`s have gone the next on the list will be cars of over 1 litre

Agreed!

Thanks for some of the feedback/comments, I will go and have a look at them both.

Still interested to hear from anyone as to the 'real' differences between the turbo and the 4.5. About £10K or so more to buy but do they have any other down sides I should be considering?

Cheers!
