Just bought an immaculate 944 2.7 - and now can't stop driving it ... the only gripe is the gearchange which is quite long - I was wondering is there any quickshift kits you can buy - I know a friend of mine who owns a 914 has had one fitted and it totally transformed his driving experience.

Also, can the 2.7 be fitted with an upgraded ECU - like an autothority chip? I know there's one available in the US - but not sure how compatible they are with euro and UK models ...

Any help would be gratefully appreciated

Rob - congrats on the 2.7. I had one of those as my first Porsche, a tough little nut it was too.

Your car can be chipped. Check here for prices etc:

Rob,
I've sent you email advising where to get some advice.

Don't want to spoil anything, and I'm not saying dont do it, but:

Be careful about sales claims for xxx additional BHP.

The ONLY way that you will know if the chip is giving additional BHP, and how much additional BHP, is before and after rolling road/dyno graphs on YOUR car. Not on another car that they did a lot of work on to reach their claim of xxx extra BHP for only £xxx.

The question you should ask yourself is: how do I know that the chip gives me xxx extra BHP?.

I have an early 944 turbo, chipped (reprogrammed Eproms). Five years ago the before figure (on a BS certified rolling road/dyno) was 226BHP, the after figure was 265BHP with 313Lb Ft torque.

Last October, I had the head rebuilt, and tested/tuned again. The result was 255BHP and 303 Lb Ft torgue.

There are some 250 model turbos running a proven 335 BHP, and looking for more. Many 944 turbos run 290 to 310 BHP. So, it can be done, just be careful of sales claims.

Enjoy the car

Rob,

There are a number of options to increasing BHP and driveability on a 944 n/a car. As you rightly say, a short shift gear change will increase drivability, so will a throttle cam at about 19:00 GBP. If you have a cat (dont go and kick it), remove it from the exhaust pipes, you don't need one for the MOT until '92 or '93 cars, but Porsche started putting them all models around '89. Removing the cat will increase BHP.

Check all mechanicals, drives in a straight line?, brakes evenly, air intake clear and clean, etc. etc. etc. In short a well maintained car will give greater pleasure than a soggy one.
