Can somone help solve an argument?
Discussion
Well its a discussion really My mate is slagging off porsches in general as he reckons the 911 is basically a 'tarted up beetle'. Obviously the shared roots are plain for all to see but how can I convince him of the technical differences re engines and chassis? So what are the similarities/differences?

The concept is the same, the execution is different.
A 911 is a very competent sports car in certain guises, at least as good - if not better - than any TVR, Ferrari or Lamborghini he may care to mention.
The layout of the beetle and 911 mainly stem from accommodation purposes - sitting two passengers over the flat engine cylinder banks meant very good packaging... a 2+2 car when Ferraris of the same length were strictly 2 seaters. Remember that the A-class and Smart put passengers over the engine, something Ferdinand Porsche was doing half a century ago.
The 911 remains a popular car for more reasons than mere performance:
1) build - better than most other sports cars you could possibly name
2) iconic looks - it is a classic design, flawed or not
3) packaging - it still offers 2+2 accommodation, and young kids and legless dwarves can fit in the back with ease - something you don't get with a Boxster etc.

Well to be fair if you took beetles and 911s of similar eras (i.e. long long ago) domster has hit the nail on the head.
Comparing a 996 and a Modern beetle is pointless as there is not lineage in common at all. The new beetle is a Golf but less practical and the 996 Turbo is one of the world's finest cars.
